what credibility are you talking about? the judges are mainly there to narrow the contestants to 24. from then on they exist just to provide comments. the ultimate decision emanates from the voting public.

if the people want a contestant to win the prize, then that means they love him/her and they are more than excited to support his/her career. they consider him/her to be an 'american idol'.

i still don't get where crediblity comes in. credibility requires expertise. voters are not seasoned talent agents like simon cowell. it's an entertainment show where people can just do whatever they want to do. if they want to vote for the 'worst', they can. it's not about credibility, it's about popularity. like what you said, it may affect the ratings. so we are talking popularity contest.

it just so happens that the judges are good at narrowing it down to 24, that most of them are good singers. among the 24 the most popular will become victorious. the most popular; the one who has created substantial drama and gimmickry.

if we are to follow logic, why in jove's name will sanjaya's win affect the ratings, when, in fact, it is the majority that will vote for him and they are the ones watching the show? no wonder the show's producers are so not worried whether or not sanjaya will win. no matter what, they are the ones reaping the rewards of the shows 'popularity.' they don't care who wins or who goes home next week.

i agree with you there. some loyal AI fanatics even said that they won't watch the show anymore if sanjaya continues to stay and much more better contestants will be eliminated just because of a group of people who is out to prove that the worst could win in this contest. and to think that these fanatics have been watching the show since the first season so this could be great loss to AI. for the record, AI have produced vocally competitive winners in the first 5 seasons, though not all of them sold many records but we can't deny the fact that they have not only good but "great" voices...
