Here's a thought...
Canon EF-S 18-55mm / Zuiko 14-45mm / Nikon bla bla... You can capture a lot of good quality pictures with just a kit lens. You can even make money if you will study, do a lot practice and of course market yourself. But, here's the thing...
What if, you are asked to shoot macro? like bugs or ants perhaps? You can't use your kit lens with those. That, you need to get a copatible macro lens.
Next... what if, you are going to shoot an INDOOR Low Light basketball / table tennis game? yes, you can use a kit lens... but, you are not allowed to use flash. lets say... F5.6 @ 55mm, ISO 1600... hmm... shutter speed of? 1/40? camera shake? not enough focal length? not enough light? pictures too grainy? not sharp? player's will be ghosting in your shots? This way, you need a better telephoto lens...
just some examples. I would agree a bit on... "It's the photographer, not the camera..."
But the best line for me would be... "It's the photographer and his camera." You can't be a photographer if you don't have a camera.Just a simple statement, you guys can expand it to relate it with other gears...

they should have priced it around or just a bit higher than the 17-85
but with so many people buying it i doubt it would go lower, people are selling their 17-85 for it
