THE ELITE Presidential Security Group (PSG) will not only protect President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Cebu City but the leaders of the other member-countries as well.
In a statement issued Monday, Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Calderon said the security forces were ready for the summit next month.
“So far, so good. We are ahead of schedule in implementing our security preparations. All personnel and resources are in place,” he said.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines Central Command under Lieutenant General Cardozo Luna has also formed a support group under Task Force Alalay.
Not only the ASEAN leaders but the members of their delegations will be protected as well, Calderon said.
He said “a sizable contingent of police personnel” had been gathered under Task Group Cebu headed by Chief Superintendent Silverio Alarcio to provide security to all the delegates from the 10 ASEAN member-states and at least seven observer-nations.
All summit venues, hotels and other places where delegates may gather will be secured, Calderon said.
He said all security personnel recently completed refresher courses on VIP security, police interdiction techniques, tactical operations, civil disturbance management and human rights.
He said the police recently acquired hundreds of new patrol cars, motorcycles, support vehicles, mobile communication units and other equipment.
He said the gun-carrying privileges of licensed firearm owners at the summit venues had been suspended.
Certain air space over Metro Cebu had been declared “restricted fly zones” for the duration of the summit in coordination with air transportation authorities, he added.
