also, with truevision... you can do direct coding with DirectX like XNA. so better choose truevision na lng you can code both at low and high level.
and again it supports many languages and it's FREE.
pare, free nang truevision? ang engine lang or apil ang sdk?

pare i suggest u start with the simplest. there are two, opengl and directx. that way you'll need the least tools. and you should also have prior knowledge of c++ (the most preferred language for programming games and task intensive programs), and to make things even a lot easier, use dev-C++ as IDE, integrated development environment (because it's free, if you have visual studio, the better).

you google opengl and dev C++, they're both opensource. and i should add, they're both low level, comparable to c++ with basic. i'm suggesting this because if you have a firm grasp on how the low level works then you'll have less problems studying game engines. game engines rely on opengl and directx functionalities for graphics. they're just wrappers to make your job easier. i recommend this the same way other people will suggest you study c++ first before you try basic. (however, doing assembly first before c++ is another level of stupidity. hehehe.)

if you want the directx side, you'll need visual studio to make things simple. i haven't tried playing with directx using devC++ yet but it may work. however, these are the things you need: directx api, and visual studio. you can download directx api from msdn, it's for free, but you need genuine windows to download it. then download visual studio c++ express (it's free) from msdn also. but if you can have visual studio professional, then the better. there are samples with the directx api download, and it will speed you up.

and i suggest you also download books on programming with opengl or directx using c++. it's not very difficult though. just learn how to program 3d objects and your done. and i guarantee you, it's fun. (it's all free! it increases the level of fun! ) when you're finish with opengl or directx that's the time is suggest you start looking for game engines. there is a fine list in wikipedia about game engines, (open source included.)

what they were talking about in the previous post were mostly using propriety engines. that's a fine choice, but i suggest you stick to opensource so that you'll have less limitations. propriety engines are better at some ways though.

    Good luck on your studying!

well for me, ang nagamit nako palang kay SDL/OpenGL combo, both low-level API like DirectX, and DirectX 8 & 9(forgot..) sa game development. nakahimo ko sa una ug simple game in 2d and 3d game. i think rpg to sa 2d using directx and pong sa 3d using SDL/OpenGL.
currently nahan ko maghimo balik ug mga simple game using opengl.

hi, tga gensan pa diay ko. hello sa mga taga cebu. share pod diay ko sa akong 3d works, actually thesis nako dati pag college. 3d virtual tour pod diay ni xa using 3d gamestudio as the engine. this is our school, the user can move freely and interact objects. heres the pics and youtube link...

sa pag model sa school gi apil nako ang inside and outside area sa school. kanang sulod sa classroom, office, library, laboratories, canteens,cr halos tanan. hehe pati pod ang gawas. mejo matagal ito matapos pero kaya man pod. this is a tribute for our beloved school.

naa ni feature na mag auto navigate sya sa selected area ng user from the list of area names ng school. the system will guide the user to the place he/she wants to go. the main idea of the project is to help the new visitors, students, and other individuals to find the location of the different areas of the school and also help them become familiar of the campus environment.

di lang galing super close sa reality atleast may similarities sa actual image ng school.

    thanks for watching.
