my brother is adopted and he knows that he is. He even knows who his real parents are. He knows that we love him a lot and he loves us back. He's only 10 yrs old and he admits getting sad if someone calls him "ampon". When he was younger, he would come home crying because his playmates would call him "ampon" but my mother always tell him that though he didn't come from her, she loves him just as much as how she loves us, her real children. My brother grew up to be a sweet and loving person though he can get rowdy and naughty at times since of course, he's still a child.... so better yet, make the child aware since the beginning that he is adopted. But always treat him/her nice and shower him/her with love so he/she will love you back.

I think it should be easier (in general) to start telling them when they are young in basic terms and then introducing more info.. I'm adopted also and i've known that for as long as i can remember. I don't even remember my parents telling me i was so young when they told me. It's always good to have the truth and the younger the better I think...it's easier for a young child to become acquainted with this kind of information because their minds are so open..
