Atienza ousts Drilon as LP president

A faction of the Liberal Party meeting at the Manila Hotel on Thursday ousted Senate President Franklin Drilon as LP president. Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, incumbent party chairman, was voted to take Drilon's place.

President Arroyo dropped by the LP national assembly meeting where she received the unanimous expression of support for her administration and the rule of law made by the party.

Initial reports said hundreds of LP members voted Atienza as party president and Presidential Chief of Staff Michael Defensor as national chairman after declaring all LP seats vacant.

Drilon, however, said the voting violated Article 8, Section 38 of the LP constitution and by-laws, which only allows the party president to call for an assembly.

Drilon insists Comelec has authority to decide on LP case

DESPITE Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos's statement that his office cannot interfere in intra-party squabbles, Senate President Franklin Drilon's camp has asked the poll body to prohibit Manila Mayor Joselito Atienza and his pro-administration allies from misrepresenting themselves as the new officers of the Liberal Party (LP).
