Designwise, AMD looks better. And theoretically, (scientific and floating-point apps), AMD would be better. But, Intel's offering performs better, (as of today), due to the 45nm manufacturing process. Here's some news:
Nvidia 790i for Intel 45nm:
As you can see from the picture board it will support three PCIe x16 slots, two plain PCI slots and two PCIe x1 slots. Those three green slots are screaming for "triple-SLI." This new C73 chipset will add support for DDR3 and 1,600MHz FSB.
Nvidia 780a for AMD:

Which would be better? Maybe ATi's new chipsets would make Phenom kick Core2, or maybe it would be otherwise..
