greetings! a friend told me about this forum but he would never reveal his id here. i believe he is lurking somewhere...hehehe

let me intro myself. i am freeflyer. my interest is martial arts. i would like to emphasize that i am not that good and that i still have lots to learn. I am a late starter in martial arts. last 1991 lang coz my parents are afraid that ill break every bone in my body. ( blame it to bloodsport and other hollywood movies). when I came here in cebu, i started studying Shotokan Karatedo which i am still doing until now. i got my 2nd Dan last year. when i went home last 1997, i wanted to continue my training but there were no shotokan schools in our place. there was however a newly opened Taekwondo gym. after much prodding from my cazin ( and also nidako na ako tiyan), i reluctantly joined and became a club officer. i was actually one of the organizers of the taekwondo program in our place. i got my Brown Belt last year... 6 days after i got promoted in Karatedo hehehehe. and i still do Taekwondo today. Way back 2000, our city received an invitation from Philsilat ( phil pencak silat association ) to send a representative for silat training. I was sent again, despite my reluctance. i trained under Hadji Yasser Tanadjalan of Silat Asli. He is actually one of the head coaches of phil silat team and an international silat referee. Right now, im sharing my knowledge in basic silat to young, open minded and peace loving individuals in abellana every sunday. i would like to emphasize that my training is focused in basics coz im not that qualified to teach the more advanced concepts ( although i know a little ... hehehehe ). we are now in the process of organizing the Society for the Propagation of Pencak Silat ( SPPS ) in the hope of helping the art. I once read in the news paper that there is virtually nobody that knows silat here in cebu...hehehehe nakatawa ko. ala siguro sila mo suroy sa abellana

let me point out, although i am studying and currently practicing these three arts, i have no intention of mixing them like fruit salad. i love classical arts ( sorry bruce lee) and i am against eclectism. i study these arts separately. i do Taekwondo every Monday and Tuesday at TCC under Sir Raul Luna, Shotokan Karatedo at SKO under Shihan Jess Paredes every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and Silat every Sunday. I make it a point to really understand the art in its purest form without contaminating it with other arts annd i feel that the secret of this is in understanding the fundamentals, which is unique from one art to another. Lastly, i am not a fighter and i hate to be called one coz i hate fighting. i just want to live the ideals of the martial arts that i am studying, all of which is about humility and respect. and i want to remain a student of these arts....

    Freeflyer,

I am also a Pencak Silat practitioner. I got the art from Iligan City when I was younger (elementary). My Bela Diri was from Malaysia but actually he was born in Indonesia until such time he moved to Malaysia (I think 1972) then he was an exchange teacher of MSU-Fisheries in Lanao Del Sur (197 together with his family. I was actually a sparring partner of his son that time then gradually maintained the foundation of its principles. For 4 years with them made my system (Eskrima) a complete form. Until now, am still combining Balintawak and Pencak Silat as for bladed weapons training. Have you heard of Langka Silat in Mindanao?

Next year, me and my family will be coming home and hopefully will meet each other and exchange ideas about the Art. Finally, I have pinoy practitioner whom I can relate... Thanks for posting.

On backside, I also practice "Hwa Rang Do" -- an Oh-Dan [5th degree black sash]. Here in Florida. Though not building a school for now... So, see you soon.

    nice meeting u...

the silat that i know is Pencak Silat Asli. it maintains elements found in the more popular styles like setia hati, nusantara, perisai diri etc... but is very filipino in origin. my guro, pak hadji yasser tanandjalan belongs to the Yakan Muslim tribe of Jolo. Asli is actually based on Silat Saudara which is their family's art. my training brothers are also mostly comprised of eskrimados from LESKAS, including Dr. Bot Jocano. Im glad u r into silat also. honestly, i dislike style bashing thats why i rarely attend forum like this. but i believe u guys are a bunch of educated and knowledgeable martial artist thats why im here wid u now... hehehehe

a friend of mine once asked me what are the traits that i got from the arts, after a bit of thinking i answered him that this depend on the martial art that im studying... for instance:

Karatedo- it influenced me to be organized, decisive, simple yet direct
Taekwondo- it influenced me to be daring, fluid and flexible in thinking

he told me that he has difficulty in ascertaining my characteristics coz i tend to be secretive at times. i forgot to tel him that i am also a practioner of Pencal Silat- deceptive and secretive hehehehehe

by the way... i am jasper, the one they were talking about. i wasnt aware that they were talking bout me... i only saw my name went i went over the pages....hehehehehe

    tke care..
