I dont know if all of you know this but it has been announced that all martial arts tournament for the SEA games next year is gonna be held in cebu. My source of this information is unreliable. Can somebody confirm this?
i hope the rules gets better
really! nindut d-ay.....
For the arnis competition in SEA games they will be using the ARPI rules with a little modification. Familiar naba mo ani na rules? Diri sa CEbu we are used to seeing the WEKAF type of competition. Ang stick walay pads pero naay body armor ang mga players. In ARPI, the sticks are paded pero ang players walay body armor. For the SEA games, since they need to ensure safety, some techniques are not anymore allowed. My friend competed in Camp Crame two weeks ago and he told me the new rules. Dili naman daw allowed ang checking unya mura na ug fencing ang dula. Point system nga naa ba "right of way". Even though ikaw naka una ug igo o naka daghan pa ug tira, kung wala ka "right of way", wala ra gyapon points. Mura man gud ug bati tanawon ang dula. Dili nimo makita ang art. mura lang gadakpanay ang mga players unya largo mano. hehe. Pwedi ra gani ug dili ka mu train ug arnis para maka daug. He told me na naa pa daw marathoner nakadaug kay paspas kaayo ug tiil. After every point made, the game is stopped unya balik na sad sa ila place.
In the WEKAF competitions in Cebu before, the rules were not as strict. It included foot sweeps, take downs, and thrusting. But when the players ran out of air, you will no longer see skillful stickfighting. The element of defense and offense is not anymore seen. For players with background in judo or jujitsu, they immediately do take downs without even doing it properly because the stick cannot stop them from doing so with their armor on. Some who cannot swing anymore will just use thrusting until the end of the match. Very boring.. Now, the rules do not allow take downs but still it is okay because checking, disarming and continuous strikes are still being allowed.
As we are introducing/transforming our fighting art to be more adaptable to SEA games or to the olympic games by changing it to a combative sport, it should be done with good forethought. Some traditionalists have very negative feedbacks on this because it might change the outlook or image of the art. Instead of seeing practical but effective techniques, the sport might bring in some fancy lousy technique just good for points but a bad habit to develop in real fighting.
2tdruid, the 23rd SEA games may be held in Cebu for martial arts.
