Loss could have pushed Melligen to drugs
MARK Jason Melligen was an exceptional boxer that was headed to stardom. But after losing one of the most important fights of his career in the US, everything went sour.
The 27-year-old former ALA Gym standout faces another setback, but this time it isn’t related to his boxing career; rather, his personal life after being arrested for using illegal drugs in a buy-bust last Tuesday night in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City.
“I did not expect this to happen although I wasn’t shocked about it because I was aware that Mark had some personal problems that affected his training. When we had a deal with Top Rank, we were hoping that Mark would be more focused away from home but he wasn’t very serious with his career. For 25 years, either in the ALA Gym or ALA Promotions, we make sure to guide all our fighters, not just in their careers but in their personal lives as well. But with Mark, he had his own mind and always wanted his way,” said ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer, who guided Melligen for most of his pro boxing career.
Melligen was knocked out by Sebastian Lujan in the ninth round of a fight that could have earned him a shot at a world title in 2011.
After the heartbreaking loss, Melligen was never the same. He didn’t take training seriously, which forced ALA Promotions to part ways with him after his contract expired on that same year.
“Almost two years ago, his contract has expired and we couldn’t give him fights because he wasn’t in shape. We knew he had problems because he was not reporting to trainings anymore. We don’t want to conclude that it was because of drugs. But he was missing a lot of trainings and it was useless to book him a fight. It is sad because Mark is a nice guy but he threw all of his opportunities out of the window,” said Aldeguer.
Melligen made waves in the US and was even signed by Top Rank to a promotional contract but was released by Bob Arum after losing to Lujan.
Melligen had a hiatus for over a year but was given another chance to resume his career under a different promoter – Sammy Gello-ani.
Melligen fought twice under Gello-ani’s guidance in 2012 and won both fights.
