Robbery suspect confesses
By Christopher Gabriel C. Bonjoc Updated July 23, 2009 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - The botched P6 million-jewelry heist and the arrest of four suspects Tuesday afternoon has given the police a break through in many other celebrated cases.
This as one of the four suspects confessed their involvement in several high-profile robberies in Cebu City.
Frederick Ybañez, 38, of Ozamiz City told the reporters yesterday that he is a member of the group of Roy Quimada that has been tagged responsible for several cases.
Ybañez claimed that he was one of the eight people, who robbed Oro Sugbo and Agencia Anne pawnshops along Magallanes Street in in May 2008.
In that heist, they escaped 10 million from and he got a share of P200,000, Ybañez said. He also alleged that Quimada was the mastermind of that robbery.
He also claimed involvement in the robbery of Golden Treasure jewelry store where their loot totaled P1 million and he got P15,000 as his share.
Other robberies that he also claimed involvement in was that at Fooda Savers Mart where they got P108,000 and he earned P3,500; JP Dental Supply where they got P1.3 million and he got P60,000; a money changer at a mall where the loot was P1.5 million and he got P70,000.
The robbery of a money changer in another mall where they got P70,000 and he earned P3,000; and the robbery of the LBC branch at a mall in the Banilad area where they got P70,000 and he again got P3,000.
Also arrested along with Ybañez were Noel Davis, 44, of Ludo Subdivision, Panabo, Davao City; Jeromy Polistico, 34, of Clarin, Misamis Oriental; and Kirby Abanilla, 25, of barangay Pasil, Cebu City.
Abanilla is believed to be the group’s local contact.
They were arrested after a brief chase last Tuesday when they tried to take off with P6.2 million worth of jewelry from Jennifer de la Cerna, a jewely dealer outside a fast food outlet at corner F. Llamas St. and N. Bacalso Ave., Basak, Cebu City.
The four were on board a black Mitsubishi Adventure, which was intercepted when they were caught in a traffic jam at Tres de Abril St., Labangon.
Ybañez also tagged Jennifer Enriquez, who returned the jewelry to de la Cerna shortly before the heist as involved in the robbery.
He alleged that he and Quimada, who was with his lawyer, met Enriquez at a coffee shop in Banawa, Guadalupe last Sunday.
Ybañez alleged that it was Enriquez, who gave them information about the jewelry that she was returning to de la Cerna.
Enriquez, who was taken into custody by the police, has denied the accusations against her.
She however reportedly said that she was surprised to find out that the lawyer defending her in an estafa case is also the lawyer of Quimada.
A fifth participant in the heist, a certain Junjun Gamanay, according to Ybañez was able to flee as he was on board a motorcycle.
Ybañez added that he was recruited by his friends named Badodo and Jimmy Espina in 2007. Both of his friends who recruited him are already dead after they were shot by the police officers in Makati, Metro Manila.
The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) also found out that there are two pending warrants of arrest against Ybañez issued by Judge Estela Alma Singco of Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 12 Cebu City for two cases in Talisay City.
He revealed that after they would rob establishments in Cebu City, they would split up and head to different pension houses and motels to avoid detection.
Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comnendador, director of the CCPO, said that they will evaluate the allegations of Ybañez and would also investigate Quimada and his lawyer aside from Enriquez.
He also said that the PNP Highway Patrol Group (HPG) will be sending a team from Manila to check the suspects, who are also believed to be involved in similar incidents in the National Capital Region.
Comendador also said that Quimada has filed a case against Sr. Insp. Michael Bastes, chief of the Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) of CCPO, for dragging his name as one of the suspects in the Fooda Savers Mart robbery.
Ybañez said that they got the police uniforms used in Fooda Savers Mart robbery from the Waray-waray Group, also noted for a string of robberies in Manila.
The CCPO director said that this is a major accomplishment of the police officers in Cebu City.
“Napi-angan jud ang grupo ni Roy Quimada ani, human nasikop ang iyang mga membro,” Comendador said.
He added that he will submit a letter of request to Police Regional Office (PRO-7) to give commendation to the barangay tanods in Punta Princesa who helped the police officers in arresting the suspects.
Police officers in Punta Princesa will also get commendations and will be recommended to get special spot promotions.
Meanwhile, Sr. Insp. Gilberto Abellar, Punta Princesa police station chief, thanked the barangay tanods of Punta Princesa for helping them arrest the suspects. — /NLQ (THE FREEMAN)

Buyer, lawyer linked to P6M heist
APART from the four arrested suspects, four more people, including a lawyer, may be included in the complaint over the attack on a jewelry dealer who nearly lost P6 million last Tuesday.
Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Patrocinio Comendador said efforts were ongoing to arrest the fifth robbery suspect, while the female friend of dealer Jennifer de la Cerna was taken into police custody for questioning.
The Cebu City Council yesterday commended the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and Barangay Punta Princesa for the swift arrest of the suspects.
The fifth suspect was identified as Junjun Gamanay, while de la Cerna’s female friend is Jennifer Enriquez. Enriquez declined to be interviewed by the media.
Comendador said his office is evaluating whether to include Enriquez and two other persons, one of them a lawyer while the other is the alleged robbery gang leader, in the robbery complaint.
Pending the results of the evaluation, Comendador said those who will be charged today with robbery will be the arrested robbery suspects Noel Salig Davis, alias Jack-Jack, 44, of Panabo, Davao City; Kirby Baguio Abanilla, 27, of Barangay Pasil, Cebu City; Frederick Mancao Ybañez, 35, of Catadman, Ozamiz City; Jeromy Sande Polistico, 44, of Clarin, Misamis Occidental; and Gamanay, who remains at large.
Ybañez identified Enriquez and the two other persons as the ones who allegedly hatched the plan to rob de la Cerna of the P6 million worth of assorted diamond jewelry last Tuesday afternoon.
Ybañez reportedly revealed the information during the police force’s tactical interrogation.
In an interview with reporters, Ybañez mentioned the names of Enriquez, Roy Quimada (whom Ybañez said was their leader) and a lawyer. He said they were the ones who hatched the plan in a meeting in a coffee shop in Cebu City last Sunday afternoon.
Quimada and the lawyer could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Ybañez claimed Enriquez was the insider.
Based on the agreement, Ybañez said, the robbery would be carried out after Enriquez returned the assorted diamond items to de la Cerna.
Police also served on Ybañez two warrants of arrest for robbery, with a total bail of P260,000 needed. He admitted to participating in at least seven robberies in the city.
He said these were the robberies on Oro Sugbo last May 24, 2008, when the group carted away P10 million; the P1.5-million robbery on Golden Treasures–Best of Jewelry last Dec. 2, 2008; the Fooda Savers’ Mart robbery last March 10, 2009, when the gang took P108,000 in coins; the P1.3-million heist on GP Dental Supply/Money Changer Shop last May 27, 2009; and the attack on the LBC-Country Mall Branch last Nov. 13, 2008, when the group took P70,000.
He said he also helped rob a money changer shop in Ayala Mall and another one across the Fuente Osmeña rotunda.
In all these robberies, Ybañez said he received more than P300,000 as his share of the loot.
Ybañez said the idea of wearing police athletic uniforms during the Fooda Savers’ robbery came from the Waray-Waray robbery group, where he used to be a member.
In a news conference, Comendador said, it is no longer surprising if Quimada’s name will be linked to the robbery.
Comendador said that shortly after the four were arrested and the police learned of their connection to Quimada’s group, a police team went to a hotel where Quimada reportedly stayed.
They saw no sign of him, however.
He said a team from the Highway Patrol Group from Manila is also expected to arrive today, after learning of the arrest of the group, whom they linked to some highway robberies in Luzon.
For swiftly arresting the robbery suspects, Comendador said, he will submit a recommendation to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 to give special awards—if possible a promotion—to the members of the Punta Princesa Police Station.
Comendador and Punta Princesa Police Station Chief Gilberto Abellar Jr. also thanked the tanods of Barangay Punta Princesa, who aided the police in the chase that resulted in the arrest of the suspects.
Comendador said the city’s police force will properly recognize the tanods and the police asset on Monday, during the CCPO’s regular flag ceremony.
Councilor Edgardo Labella drafted the resolution asking that the police and the barangay tanods responsible for the immediate capture of four men be commended.
Councilor Augustus Pe Jr. would have wanted that they wait for an official report from the CCPO.
“I’m just cautioning my fellow members (of the city council). Why don’t we wait for a comprehensive narration of the incident? There may be persons not seen in the newspaper who may have helped,” Pe said.
Labella based his resolution on a newspaper report of the incident. He asked that the CCPO, under the leadership of Senior Supt. Comendador, and Barangay Captain Diorico be also commended for the feat.
The commendation authored by Labella came over a week after he criticized Comendador over the investigation on the death of the wife of pastor Leonardo Jastiva.
Because the council is quick to point out mistakes, Labella said, they must be equally fast in recognizing a job well-done. (JTG/With RHM)
