    backgrounder:
I read these authors, Chuck Palahniuk, Jodi Picoult & Milan Kundera to name a few.
I think Kafka on the Shore is a good introduction to Murakami. Its not so heavy handed with the surreal fantasy.

These are some books on my amazon.com wish list
    1. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - Haruki Murakami
    2. When You Are Engulfed in Flames - David Sedaris
    3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky

*As far as my family and friends kids goes, I always give them books as presents. Forget the toys*
    My favorite books for kids.
The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame (good for reading-age, pre-teens)
Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak (Good for kids just starting to read)

OT: I thought Venus in Furs. hehehe. This was made into a film, right?

“Elena dreamed of Pierre and Bijou. The full-fleshed Bijou, the whore, the animal, the lioness: a luxuriant goddess of abundance, her flesh a bed of sensuality – every pore and curve of her. In the dream her hands were grasping, her flesh throbbed in a mountainous, heaving way, fermenting, saturated with moisture, folded into many voluptuous layers. Bijou was always prone, inert, awakening only for the moment of love.”

From the top of my head...

    1. The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama
    2. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (I'm such a schmuck for not having read this sooner)
    3. Watchmen by Alan Moore (For collecting purposes, I've always wanted my own copy of the graphic novel.)

    And maybe...

    4. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk
    5. A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity: A Memoir by Bill O'Reilly (I wanna read it, then tear the thing up and use it to wipe dog crap afterwards. lol)

It's certainly difficult for me now to wish for books as Christmas presents especially that I can just borrow any book I want from the library; BUT I guess I wouldn't mind receiving these three to add to my own library:

    (1) Oh, The Places You Will Go - Dr. Seuss
    (2) The Complete Set of Peanuts - 50 years of Charles Schulz
    (3) The Complete Collection of Enid Blyton and/or The Complete Set of Larson's The Far Side
