Star Trek is interesting for me because of how it portrays the 'what-ifs' of the future. Several socio-political and moral conflicts of today are mirrored in most of their episodes in a futuristic type of way. Take for example an ST:Voyager episode where the holographic Doctor is involved. They are debating as to how to treat the Doctor: as a piece of equipment or as a human being with emotions and feelings (that have somehow developed due to errors in how the Doctor was programmed). I forgot what episode that was.

I'm pretty sure there are a hundred more episodes that I haven't seen that portray these 'issues' more.
