Cebu has most registered vehicles—NSO

Cebu has the largest traffic of vehicles among the country’s 79 provinces outside Metro Manila, according to the National Statistics Office.
The large vehicle ownership in Cebu can be a gauge of the level of prosperity and the size of population of the Central Visayas province, which is composed of six cities and 47 municipalities.
In its publication “The Philippine Countryside in Figures,” the NSO said that 266,086 motor vehicles were registered in Cebu province in 2005, including 229,569 private vehicles; 33,820 vehicles for hire; and 2,697 government vehicles.
Other provinces that face similar traffic problems are Laguna, with 181,148 vehicles; Bulacan, 166,548; Batangas, 166,049; Pampanga, 161,748; and Cavite, 157,575.
But this could not be compared to the gravity of the traffic problem in the country’s capital region. Nearly a third of all vehicles in the whole country were registered in Metro Manila.
The National Capital Region had 1.581 million vehicles as of 2005. About 423,754 or more than half of the 729,299 private cars in the whole country were registered in Metro Manila.
Data showed that as of 2005, a total of 5.06 million vehicles were registered around the whole country, of which 4.079 million were private vehicles; 898,019 were vehicles for hire; 77,953 were government vehicles; and 4,586 were vehicles either with diplomatic plates or exempted from registration.
Private vehicles included 729,299 cars; 1.378 million utility vehicles including jeeps, vans and AUVs; 152,248 sports utility vehicles; 1.553 million motorcycles; 241,624 trucks; 4,355 buses; and 20,600 trailers.
On the other hand, vehicles for hire included 44,578 taxicabs; 222,094 jeepney and other public utility vehicles including FX taxis; 25,990 buses; 584,698 tricycles; 17,325 trucks; and 3,183 trailers.
Outside Metro Manila, private car ownership was highest in Cebu with 27,273 cars; 69,899 UVs; and 6,674 SUVs. Other provinces with large number of private cars, UVs and luxury vehicles were Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga and Cavite.
