Azkals win, Clavio speaks; what a day
Challenge cup semifinals, here we come!

Last Tuesday night was something. I guess, it’s safe to assume that football fans have never seen something like that. An epic win against the former champion Tajikistan to clinch a semifinals spot.

And a day, later, fans are talking about the win but there’s buzz, too, about the disparaging remarks by Arnold Clavio, who said on GMA’s morning show on the morning of the game,”Di naman sila mga Filipinos, nagpapanggap lang na kayumangi.”

Very disappointing remarks from a respected journalist like Arnold Clavio, who has just proven what fans suspect, journalists who have ignored the sport for so long show their ignorance when they try to sound like experts talking about football.

I hope Arnold Clavio thought for a moment, how could they play for the PHILIPPINE national team if they are not Pinoys?

Oh yeah, Mr. Clavio, in case you missed the memo. These guys are as Filipino as you and me. They are not even naturalized citizens hired to play for the flag. They are Pinoys, period! The same guys you champion in your TV shows about OFWs.

Instead of the “think before you click” campaign, perhaps GMA too would start a “think before you speak” for its commentators, one of whom also said that someone should be punished.

So if they are that quick to bat for a sanction, fans are justified too, to demand that GMA sanction them for racist remarks. Just because they don’t look like us, they are not Pinoys?

And someone should tell them, too, not to paint an ugly picture of female fans because, while defending a female official, they kept talking as if all female fans would take off their clothes for anyone who happens to be good looking.

Nice, no?

Incidents like these are disappointing. And the GMA anchors are right, this is not the first and there will be more incidents and I’m not talking about women and the Azkals. I’m talking about journalists and football.

Despite the recent success, there are really those who seem uncomfortable with the idea that Pinoys are playing football, that we are finally slowly becoming a footballing nation.

Issues like these will keep cropping up because guys like Arnold Clavio, who know as much about football as I do about nuclear physics, have the agenda and the venue to speak their mind.

Oh, just in case Mr. Clavio missed my point. You, sir, are a misinformed individual who came out stupid while trying to sound smart.

To fans, well, I guess we’ll see each other on Friday. Let’s cheer again for the Philippine national team and let’s offer our first drink to Clavio and hope that Pinoys raised abroad will teach him a thing or two on how to be a Filipino. He sure needs a few lessons.

Azkals will play today. Hope they will reach the finals. Maybe Arnold is right that these guys are not Filipino in culture, but hey they have Filipino Blood and because of that blood to have a chance to play world football for the Philippines. We have something to root for other than our basketball team, and Pacquiao who is about to retire.

If they had full foreign blood they wouldnt have that chance to play world football, i guess.

Mao nay giingon we are only Filipino by constitution but not 100% pure by blood.

Why call them halflings? Why call them German Shepherds? They may not be brown but they are acknowledging their Filipino blood. Almost everyone in the Philippines is of mix race. The only pure Filipino is—I believe—the Aeta people.

Filipinos love to claim other people. When there is a Filipino-looking person gaining celebrity outside the Philippines, we are very quick to check and trace if they have Filipino blood. We are very proud of Nicole Scherzinger, Mutya Buena, Enrique Iglesias, apl.de.ap, Batista, Tia Carrere, Phoebe Cates, Tim Lincecum, Kirk Hammett, and Caterina Fake. Those people don't even have a Philippine passport.

The Azkals were given Philippine passports. How come now that the Azkals are in a bad light, we Filipinos are very quick to disown them?

Filipinos are racist. We make a lot of noise when we get discriminated but, here, in the Philippines discrimination against color and gender are unchecked. People still get called negra, bayot boang or anak araw.

It is foul to call them half-breeds. This ain't WarCraft or any other fantasy game or story—the word halfling only applies in the fantasy genre. We don’t know—these men that you guys call un-Filipino—the browns in the land of whites—may have been discriminated in their respective other countries. If the whites don’t want ‘em and you don’t want ‘em, where do they belong? Like, it is their fault that they are of mixed race.

I, myself, am a half-breed. I am proud of who I am. It is my character—good or bad—that defines me, not my color.

was it in my post that i love fil-ams who grew up in the states? asa diha? ayaw pataka yawyaw or assume. naa man diay mga nagtiniil na nagdula ug football, why not hone their talents?

and why bring lyn ching, and other half-blood in the discussion when these half bloods grew up in our country, they even studied here, and most fil-chi are almost 80% filipino blooded.
