    Banal to fight African

    Wednesday, May 6, 2009

FOLLOWING the stunning performance of his idol, AJ Banal is now more determined to prove his detractors wrong.

He suffered a setback when he lost a 10th round stoppage to Rafael Concepcion in a battle for the WBA super flyweight interim title fight last year. However, he showed he was back on on track to stardom when he knocked out Indonesian champion Nouldy Manakane in the 4th round last Jan. 31 in Tagbilaran, Bohol.

The unfazed 20-year-old Banal is again tasked with another test when he tangles with the dangerous Tanzanian terror, Mbwana “African Golden Boy” Matumla in another ALA Promotions extravaganza on May 16 at the Cebu Coliseum in partnership with the giant broadcast network ABS/CBN.

    Titles

Matumla, who is a former IBO World Super-flyweight champion, WBA Pan-African super flyweight champion, former WBA Intercontinental super-flyweight champion and former Pan Asian Boxing Association (Paba) 115 lbs. champion, is out to derail any comeback plans of the Cebuano boxer.

    Heavy contender

The multi-titled African who has fought the best in his division, including a win over the veteran Filipino champion, Eric Barcelona, from whom he grabbed the IBO World Super-flyweight title, is not to be taken lightly as he is out to dislodge Banal from world ratings.

“I vow to stop Banal. I am stronger and more experienced, and I am a former world champion,” said Matumla.

In the undercard, another returning ALA ward, Czar Amonsot, makes his second appearance after demolishing Indonesian, Zoel Fidal, in the 5th round when he collides with 28-year-old Morris “Virus” Chule of Kenya who has a record of 11-6-2 with 8 knockouts. The African warrior came from a back-to-back win over Musa Njure and Omari Ramadan.(PR)

Nietes, Vargas may fight in US this June

    By Edri K. Aznar

THERE is a big probability that ALA Boy Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will defend his World Boxing Organization mini-flyweight title against interim champion Manuel Vargas in the US.

Because of the outbreak of the swine flu virus, all events, including boxing, in Mexico has been put on hold.

"The Manny Pacquiao Blog". Click here for stories and updates on the Filipino boxing champ.

“We already accepted the fight to be on June 18 in Mexico, but Sampson Lewkowicz e-mailed us recently that all events in Mexico have been put on hold,” said Michael Aldeguer in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu.

ALA Promotions, which was planning to hold the world title fight in the Philippines, had accepted the offer of renowned boxing promoter Fernando Beltran before the outbreak of the virus.

Beltran, who has ties with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, is looking at the US as their next option for the venue of the unification bout of Nietes and Vargas.

“There may be a chance that the fight will be in the US. But the Philippines is already out of the question,” said Aldeguer.

The Nietes-Vargas showdown was supposedly a main event fight in Mexico. But if the fight takes place in the US, in which the 105-pound weight class isn’t as popular as the bigger weight divisions, then there is a possibility that it would be inserted in a big card.

Nietes won his second title defense last Feb. 28 with a unanimous decision over Mexican challenger Erik Ramirez. He knocked down Ramirez four times—in the first, fifth, ninth and 12th rounds—in their 12-round clash in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Vargas won the Interim WBO mini-flyweight crown from fourth round knockout over former top contender Daniel Reyes.

    EX-CHAMP VOWS TO KO BANAL

Former IBO World Super-flyweight champion and ex-WBA Intercontinental champion, Mbwana Matumla also popularly known as “African Golden Boy” has set his mind to grab the lofty world ratings of local favorite, AJ “Bazooka” Banal when the two collide on May 16, 2009 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The former multi-tiled veteran of 22 fights (18-3-1 N/C, 10 ko’s) recently added another jewel to his crown when he annexed the previously unheared International Circuit Boxing World Bantamweight title when clobbered Francis Miyeyusho over 12 rounds winning a lopsided decision last January 17, 2009.

The Tanzanian terror is also credited of beating Filipino Eric Barcelona who is ranked No.1 in the latest OPBF rankings to win the vacant IBO Super-flyweight title in South Africa. He has also beaten another Filipino Joel Avila in a clash for the WBA Intercontinental Super-flyweight title that “Filipino fighters are good and tough but I am better”.

When the ageless 34 years old Matumla won the WBA Pan-African Super-flyweight title over South Africa’s Simon Ramon boxing writer Burton Brown of the “The Express” said “ Matumla brought back to Tanzania the lost glory of professional boxing”. He said further that Matumla who was at one time ranked WBA No. 5 World contender faded from the limelight when he was stopped by highly regarded SILENCE MABUZA whom he had previously beaten during their amateur days.

When asked how he will fare with the explosive punches of Banal, the African warrior said with confidence “I will come to Cebu to knock-out Banal. I am faster, stonger and more experience. Our fight will be over in 5 rounds and I will be the last man standing.”

Both Matumla and Banal are southpaws with the hometown boy having an edge in kayo percentage over the African.

Banal and stablemate Czar Amonsot and Jason Pagara will showcase their readiness in a PRESS PREVIEW at the SM Atrium on Saturday at 4pm which will include a 3 round sparring session in their work-out.
