Which is better? ATI or Nvidia?

Yeah they are somewhat at par. But GTX260 is more expensive like for like 20$ more. 4870 1gb -$240 while GTX260 $260 so still ATI has the edge.

that's not my point. my previous post was a response to your statement:

I think ATI is better when high doses AA and AF are enabled and completely pawns the GTX260. While GTX260 in lower resolutions without AA and AF will dominate the 4870.

Unfortunately for me a low budget gamer price is always a factor. For me when talking about performances of cards, I can't separate price and performance.
As what I can see in some review sites. HD4870 has slighter edge on Vista DX10 on high resolutions with some AA+AF while GTX260+ dominates the 4870 on Windows XP or DX9 setting on low to high resolutions.

Now I would call that par on performance.
Its a personal preference that would dictate your choice.

these tests were run on WINDOWS VISTA. notice the subsequent 4xAA/16xAF 2560x1600 resolutions.

Now I would call that par on performance.
