Russian chess grandmaster Mark Taimanov, who lost to Fischer in 1971, said: "His whole life was dominated by the chess board, by chess and this is perhaps why he was so great."

It is symbolic that he died at 64 as 64 is the number that symbolizes the chess board," he told Reuters Television.

Debate has always raged in chess circles about who was the greatest, but Fischer himself was in no doubt. He once said: "It's nice to be modest, but it would be stupid if I did not tell the truth. It is Fischer."

Fisher died of kidney failure Thursday in a Reykjavik hospital after a long illness, his spokesman, Gardar Sverrisson, said Friday.

In his final years, Fischer railed against the chess establishment, alleging that the outcomes of many top-level chess matches were decided in advance.

Instead, he championed his concept of random chess, in which pieces are shuffled at the beginning of each match in a bid to reinvigorate the game.

“I don’t play the old chess,” he told reporters when he arrived in Iceland in 2005. “But obviously if I did, I would be the best.”

Round six of the Corus Chess Tournament in Wijk started with a minute's silence in remembrance of Fischer. After the games had started attention was concentrated on the Honorary Group, which is due to start playing their tournament on Saturday. After a short opening ceremony, all four grandmasters gave first reactions to the news of Fischer's passing:

Viktor Kortchnoi: "A chess genius has died; a loss for humanity."

Lajos Portisch: "A big shock; the best chess player in history has passed away."

Ljubomir Ljubojevic: "A man without frontiers. He didn't divide the East and the West, he brought them together in their admiration for him."

Jan Timman: "A great player and a great example for many. His book My 60 Memorable Games had a big impact on me. It is a shame he didn't continue to enrich
