New babies spend their time in different behavioral states: quiet sleep, active sleep, drowsy, alert, fussy and crying. Although we adults yawn when drowsy, watch for yawning in babies when they are alert. If they are overstimulated, they may try to calm themselves by yawning, looking away, or sucking on their lips or hands – all of which can activate the relaxing effects of the parasympathetic nervous system.

New born babies need to adjust to the new environment. Yawning means the brain and body lacks oxygen, therefore it has to be compensated by yawing. It is a good sign that the baby is adjusting well since it had a different oxygen supply system when he/she was still in the womb of his/her mother.
