In the US and other foreign countries, even third world countries like Mexico, poor families have access to 12-500 channels, because cable is cheap. Monopolies from Media Corporations are restricted by the Government.
Here, we get 2-5 channels. And the two media giants are like Mob bosses. They control everything from politicians to vote, local films to be released down to the lifestyle Filipino kids will copy. That's the difference.

With the present situation in the Philippines the most priority is the daily basic needs, it's quite stressful in making ends meet, I guess they are entitled to whatever relaxation they may consider fitting after a hard days work, or else the pressure on the students side to contend with the daily challenges of studying. Kinahanglan pud na sila mo-unwind and I think ABS-CBN only address that need.
I do not know the point if we talk about the number of providers, if there even two stations with a variety of daily programs, then there is always an option.
