sorry if it offended u. maybe i have a wrong perception about dowry. can you give us more info about this please?
Definition: A gift from the groom to the bride at the time of marriage in Islam. Often translated as "dowry," a term which is misleading as the mahr remains the property of the bride after marriage. The mahr is meant to offer the bride financial security within and after the marriage.
Examples:
When Mohammad and Nour married, he gave her a mahr of $50,000 which remains in her savings account.
Waalaikumussalam! Eid Mubarak to u too! I hope u had an easy Ramadan
Ooh, oh dear. Well, that's totally incorrect. That's what my dad used to think. Alhamdulillah, he knows better now.
First and foremost look at the timeline between the old testament and new, it is more than 2 thousand years. Which means as per ancestor of both our faith we share a common one which was Abraham. Polygamy was a common practice either before him or after him.
Secondly Christianity and Judaism is not one and the same thing. We believe in Jesus Christ but not the Jewish people. So what their practices culturally is different to mine.
So our belief in one wife comes from the teaching of Christ which is absolute no "ifs and buts", no options or justifications, or whatsoever.
Lastly, Jesus was the prime example of treating women. He showed the value of women exemplified by his treatment to His mother, Martha, Mary, The greek syro-phoenician woman, the canaanite woman, the Samarian woman, the prostitutes, and many more.
I can only speak and know what I know about Christ and how valuable morality is in my faith..
^^
Dowry doesn't just have to be money. My husband gave me jewellery instead of money at our Nikah (marriage ceremony). If a husband gives his wife money, it belongs to her entirely and she can do whatever she wants with it. He doesn't "buy" her like a cow.
@jeremiahjay. Muhammad pbuh too was the best example of the right way of treating women. I agree with u about Jesus pbuh. I respect him, even more so now that I'm Muslim.
Both male and female children are equal in the eyes of Allah since He is the One to choose a baby's gender. Parents must not favour one over the other coz that's considered as an act of injustice.
Actually, before Islam, baby girls were killed and buried coz it brought shame and Muhammad (pbuh) stopped this female infanticide. He said:
“The one who raises a daughter properly, she shall be his pass into Heaven.” Another time he said, “Whoever has a daughter, and he does not bury her alive, does not insult her, and does not favor his son over her, Allah will enter him into Paradise.”
Perhaps that's where the confusion of females being preferred came from.
