CEBU CITY -- A disc jockey bested 11 other candidates to bag the Miss Cebu 2012 crown Wednesday night.
Pierre Anther Infante, 21, is a Mass Communication student from Southwestern University who, in her answer to the final question, said she believes that taking care of what we have in Cebu is the best way to strengthen ecotourism.
Nursing and mass communication students and graduates made up the top five. Rachel Chloe Palang and Ella Beverly Sarmago, first and second runners-up, respectively, are Mass Communication graduates, while third runner-up Jonnie Rose Wee and fourth runner-up Herlie Kim Artugue are nursing students.
Infante was also awarded Best in Evening Gown in her metallic, mermaid-cut creation by Cary Santiago, who was also awarded Best Designer.CEBU. Communication and nursing students ruled Wednesday night’s Miss Cebu pageant. The winners are (from left) Herlie Kim Artugue (fourth runner-up), Ella Beverly Sarmago (second runner-up), Pierre Anther Infante (Miss Cebu 2012), Rachel Chloe Palang (first runner-up) and Jonnie Rose Wee (third runner-up). The coronation night held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Lahug was not just about beautiful faces but beautiful couture as well. Organizers showcased about 2O designers, with four designing the Indo-Malay-inspired opening outfits of the 12 contestants, while another four designed their city wear.
The 12 others designed the evening gowns.
A mix of personalities made up the judges, from former Akbayan party list congresswoman Risa Hontiveros to fashion editor and columnist Mayenne Carmona, designer Francis Libiran, restaurateur Ana Rocha and Cathay Pacific executive Martin Xu.
Among the heart-stopping moments were when candidates Sarmago and April Ann Claire White tripped on their gowns. No one, fortunately, fell.
Wee also provoked a reaction from the crowd when, during the preliminary question, she was asked to describe Cebu in one word. She picked a noun: mango.
She quickly recovered, though, explaining, "It's not a conventional word to describe Cebu but when you think about it, the mango is sweet. In Cebu, tourists are welcomed with hospitality, which expresses the sweetness of the Cebuano."
Pageants apparently develop buzz words of their own. Four contestants, including eventual winner Infante, repeatedly mentioned "advocacy."
Two contestants used "I believe" to start their statements, including second runner-up Sarmago, while Michelle Angelique Tan said the phrase four times in just one answer.
Five contestants repeated the question at the start of their answers, one way to gain more time to compose a response.
It was Sarmago's answer during the preliminary round that garnered the loudest applause. She was asked what she would choose, between career and love. "Very tough choice," she said, "but I will choose love because a career can be gained through intelligence and I believe I already possess that. Love is the essence of why we are living."
The Miss Cebu contest was a gathering of beautiful people on and off the stage, including past winners like exporter Janice Minor, the very first winner of the Miss Cebu Tourism pageant.
All the winners won a trip to Hong Kong. The top four will also tour Las Vegas, and Infante will have an additional trip to a city of her choice in the United States, Europe or Africa.
All winners also took home cash prizes, with Infante taking home a total of P80,000. With the crown already on her head, the new Miss Cebu mused that she was not expecting to win, but she tried her best. When asked what her advocacy will be, Infante said, "To support local talents." (Sun.Star Cebu)
