    Can an employee be compelled to render overtime?

    When an employee spends additional time for work, he puts in more physical and mental effort. It is but proper that he be compensated for that. He is also delayed in going home and cannot spend time with family and enjoy the comforts of his home. As such, the law discourages employers to require employees to work overtime. Generally, he cannot compel the employee to render overtime, except in certain instances (Sec 10, Rule I, Bk. III, IRR) to wit:

    1) When the country is at war or when any other national or local emergency has been declared by the National Assembly or the Chief Executive;

    2) When overtime work is necessary to prevent loss of life or property, or in case of imminent danger to public safety due to actual or impending emergency in the locality caused by serious accident, fire, floods, typhoons, earthquake, epidemic or other disaster or calamities;

    3) When there is urgent work to be performed on machineries, installations, or equipment, in order to avoid serious loss or damage to the employer or some other causes of similar nature;

    4) When the work is necessary to prevent loss or damage to perishable goods;

    5) When the completion or continuation of work started before the 8th hour is necessary to prevent serious obstruction or prejudice to the business or operations of the employer;

    6) When overtime work is necessary to avail of favorable weather or environmental conditions where performance or quality of work is dependent thereon.

    A well managed company normally avoids overtime work because aside from paying employees extra (++) for the overtime work, there is the overhead which shoot up too. They do try and plan for enough resources (manpower and equipment) but in instances when overtime is necessary, they extend yet also review what needs to be done to avoid it again. Just my thoughts on the topic.

    mao jud ning mga pinoy. ang uban mag cge pangita ug OT. Nya kung naa nay OT, dili mang OT mag cge pa reklamo. 2 hrs OT after shift is ok raman. think about it, dili man gani mo manguli dritso after work. mang laag pa, manginom ug unsa pa nang mga extra extra buhaton after shift. kana na hinuon nga bayran mo dili pa hinuon mo. grow up kid and live responsibly. kung dili ka maka OT, pwede raman ka mo hangyo nga lain lang nga adlaw. naa pa gani uban pa pili-on ka after shift ba or OT during your rest day. cgeg reklamo gagmay sweldo. naay higayon maka supplement sa income reklamo gihapon. kung mo ingon mo way klaro ang companya mas moy klaro. mura ra nag mag cge ka imagine mo kaon ug steak. gi offeran na ka steak mo balibad ka kai grabe cholesterol ug unsa pa nang reklamo nimo

    sakto jud ni. believe me, ang higher ups ga bantay kinsa ning mga dili mo render ug kinsa ning mga ga cge render ug OT. it speaks man gud of how you work and your committment. So, whenever there are openings for higher positions, take a guess who has the advantage? Ding3x, you're correct... the one who rendered the OTs. coz when you get to the manager level, you are expected to work LOOOONG hours without getting paid OT.

    Mao na, kamo mga kids, you're in the corporate world already. this is not college anymore and you are not working for charity. swerte na mo naka work mo sa BPO. Ang uban company/industry, nag beg pa ang mga workers for OT. Someone close to me told me that they have to apply their OTs before their shift ends and see if mo approve ba na mag OT ka just to finish your tasks. If dili i-approve, then you have to extend your shift without pay just to get your job done
