When news first broke that pound for pound stalwart Floyd Mayweather had been accused of domestic abuse by the mother of three of his four children last week, the boxing world was in shock. Initially, many including myself wondered if Josie Harris was telling the truth about the allegations given that she had accused Floyd of something similar in the past but later dropped the charges.
Now though it appears that evidence is mounting up against Mayweather, and that even if he manages to have the grand larceny charge he was arrested for dropped, he could well be convicted of battery.
According to TMZ, Mayweather's ten year old son is now backing up his mother's version of events, including the assault and death threats from Floyd over Harris dating basketball player C.J Watson. The full arrest report can be seen here.
From the arrest report it seems Mayweather was angry at the fact that the house was messy while Harris was out seeing another man, and that he got very agitated during his first visit. Then when he came back, accompanied by a friend, he attacked Harris in full view of his children, one of whom fled across the street to get help.
So what does all this mean for Mayweather?
Well firstly that the Clark County district attorney looks to have more than enough to pursue the battery charge, and will probably do so in the coming days. Secondly Floyd will likely be facing a lengthy legal battle over the charges, and if convicted could be looking at a jail term as well.
Given the evidence mounting up against him for the battery charge, the larceny charge might well now be more difficult to get rid of as well, although under the circumstances that won't be what's worrying him right now.
In the greater scheme of things, a conviction and jail term now could mean the end of Floyd's boxing career given his age and the potential sentence length he is looking at. He might be one of those fighters who fights on until he's nearing his forties like recent opponent Shane Mosley, but with his recent admission that he's not as fast as he used to be, and the popular idea that he wants to preserve his unbeaten record this is probably unlikely unless fiscally necessitated.
Supposing he does beat the charges and returns to the ring, he can also expect his income to drop considerably now that major sponsors will be wary to say the least about going near him for a while. Although his pay per view drawing power probably won't be that badly affected.
Will he be convicted?
Obviously things are still a long way away from even going to court just yet, and there might still be other sides to the story which have yet to be heard.
However, although he might be unbeaten in the ring since his amateur days, Mayweather's record when it comes to encounters with the Las Vegas police department is that of a journeyman at best. Previous convictions including those in 2002 and 2005, both for assaulting women, are bound to count against him publicly at least, as is the 'Money' persona he uses to hype up his fights and the recent racial tirade he broadcast across the internet.
Then again if his lengthy arrest record hasn't sunk him yet, one more heinous act probably won't make that much difference to the public perception of him in the long run.
Speaking to a few local fans about Mayweather's latest troubles, there seems to be a clear divide between those who want to see him back in the ring in the near future and those who are tired of him and his antics entirely.
Which is more or less the same as it was before any of his latest problems came out.
Some fans are clamoring to see him fight at all, others only want him to take on only the likes of Pacquiao or Williams before he retires, and others don't care if he ever comes back from his latest vacation turned legal nightmare.
it turns out, CJ Watson is not even dating this girl...![]()
