SC: 2010 Bar exam results out Thursday

The results of the 2010 Bar examinations will be released on Thursday, the Supreme Court announced on Tuesday.

At a news briefing, SC Public Information Office deputy chief Gleoresty Guerra said that Chief Justice Corona has called for a special en banc (full court) session on Thursday morning "for the decoding of the 2010 Bar examinations results."

In the session, the justices will also determine the passing percentage for the exams.

The decoding "is the process where the [SC] orders the Office of the Bar Confidant to open the sealed envelopes with the names of the candidates who passed the exams," said Office of the Bar Confidant head Cristina Layusa.

After the decoding, the names will be flashed on video screens mounted near the Supreme Court’s Padre Faura gate. The exact time the names will be flashed depends on the time the decoding ends and the number of those who passed the exams, Layusa said.

“The decoding is always with the presence of the chair of the Bar exams. For this year, it was Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales. So Justice Morales will be with us during the decoding," she added.

2010 Bar blast

The examinations were held last September and marred by a grenade-throwing incident that left close to 50 people, mostly law students outside the venue, injured. The incident was blamed on warring fraternities.

The National Bureau of Investigation has filed multiple frustrated murder and multiple attempted murder charges against lone suspect Anthony Leal Nepomuceno of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.

The Department of Justice is still conducting a preliminary investigation on Nepomuceno, who has repeatedly maintained his innocence.

A total of 4,856 law graduates took the 2010 Bar examinations at the De La Salle University on Taft Avenue in Manila. The examinees were composed 2,521 new takers and 2,335 repeaters.

The Supreme Court conducts the Bar examinations pursuant to Article VIII, Section 5 of the Constitution which provides that it shall have the power to promulgate rules governing the admission to the practice of law.

This year's Bar examinations will be held at the University of Sto. Tomas campus in Manila in November.

SC raises passing rate of 2010 Bar exams from 11% to 20.26%

MANILA, Philippines (PNA) -- After the special en banc session on Thursday morning of the Supreme Court (SC), the justices approved to increase the passing rate in the 2010 Bar Examinations from 11 percent to 20.26 percent.

It was gathered that 984 examinees passed the Bar exams held during the four Sundays of September last year.

From a total of 5,038 applicants to the 2010 Bar exams, seven were denied and 19 withdrew, while 4,847 examinees completed the four Sundays of the examinations.

The SC clarified that it lowered to 72.5 percent the passing grade from the previous 75 percent.

Compared to previous years, the decoding of the examination booklets of the examinees is now being done earlier.

Likewise, the SC is set to issue a new policy that there will be no more “disqualification” for the next succeeding Bar exams.

Here is the percentage of the passing grade in the Bar exams:

-- Political Law - 15 percent; Labor Law - 10 percent; Civil Law - 15 percent; Taxation Law - 10 percent; Mercantile - 15 percent; Criminal Law - 10 percent; Remedial Law - 20 percent; and Legal Ethics/Forms - 5 percent for a total of 100 percent.

Compared to the 2009 Bar exams, the passing rate in last year’s Bar exams is lower such that 1,451 or 24.58 percent passed the 2009 Bar exams, while 4,452 failed the exams.

Supreme Court: 982 pass 2010 Bar exams

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 2) - A total of 982 examinees passed the 2010 Bar examinations, the Supreme Court announced late Thursday.

The SC said a total of 4,847 examinees finished taking the tests in all 8 law subjects.

"Originally, 5,038 law graduates have filed their petitions to take the 2010 Bar tests. Of the number, 5,012 petitions were granted," the court said Wednesday.

SC Justice Conchita Carpio Morales is the chairperson of the 2010 Committee on the Bar Examinations.

Prior to the release of the results, a special En Banc session for the "decoding" of the results were held. "Decoding...is when the Court orders the Bar Confidant to open envelopes containing the names of the examinees in the presence of the Bar Chairman," according to Deputy Clerk of Court and Bar Confidant Atty. Ma. Cristina Layusa.

Bomb blast, changes

The 2010 exams at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila were marred by a bomb blast that hurt 24 people on the final day.

The exams were previously held on four Sundays of September. For 2011, the schedule has been moved to November. The home of the Bar exams will also now be at the University of Sto. Tomas.

The high court will also be using new types of examinations. The Bar is conducted annually pursuant to the SC's constitutional mandate to promulgate rules governing, among others, the admissions to the practice of law.

The first Bar exams were held in 1901, with only 13 examinees, the high court said.

Atenean tops 2010 bar exams

MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE) Students from Ateneo occupied half of the top 10 list of the 2010 Bar Examinations, with one of them being the bar topnotcher, the Supreme Court (SC) announced on Thursday.

Cesareo Antonio Singzon Jr. of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) law school in Makati City got the highest score of 89% in the Bar Exams held last year, according to Justice Conchita Carpio Morales.

He bested 982 other bar passers, or 20.26% of all the 4,847 examinees.

Coming in second is Filemon Ray Javier, also from ADMU, who had a score of 86.95%.

Other Ateneo passers include Janette Ancog (4th), Johana Sunga (5th) and William Benson Gan (9th).

The rest of the top 10 barristers came from the University of the Philippines (UP), Arellano University, and University of San Carlos.

All Bar Exam passers, or those who received a grade of 72.5% or higher, are set to take their oath at 10 a.m. on April 14 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

They may secure their clearances from the Office of the Bar Confidant from March 21 to April 13.
