Default Japanese firm develops technology to transmit movie in 0.5 seconds

A Japanese company has developed technology to transmit a two-hour movie in 0.5 seconds , the world's fastest speed achieved with fibre-optic cables in the field, it said.

Kansai Electric used fibre-optic cables on power-transmitting steel towers to achieve the speed of one terabit per second, which is more than 100 times faster than inter-city data transmissions currently in use, a spokesman said.

The company, Japan's second-largest power supplier, has not decided when to put the technology into practical use but said it was possible that it would come in 2010 or later, he said.

1,000 Gbps is around 125 GBps. That's where technology is heading.

The fastest available so far is 10GBps or 10 GByte per second. Switches with this ports are already available in the market. The price is still high though.

If we assume that a 2 hour movie (DVD quality) is around 7GBytes. Then, using the 10 GBps transmission speed, we can transfer the entire disc in 0.7 sec.

    Who wants one?

    We can provide that.

tamblot, correct me if i'm wrong but i think 10 giga bits/sec = 1.25 giga bytes/sec (1 byte = 8 bits) so assuming maximum throughput, 7GBytes would be transfered at 5.6 sec. still way too fast. but in reality we really don't get this speed even on full-duplex. (can 10GBS can run full-duplex?)

1000GBS? i don't think we need this, but for your network backbone that would be great but still way too fast.

ordinary PC users can't still appreciate this technology..our hard dirve [PATA/SATA] can only churn out 133-300 MBps of data transfer..i think this is only viable in the military or in a scientific research agency

I stand corrected. Ridney is right. speed is Mbps and not MBps.

tolstoi is right regular users cant appreciate this. even power users cant fully benefit from this for now. its good that the technology does exist and is being worked on.

Awaken to see Japan yahoobb user (yahoobb***username****bbtec.net) using ms messenger spamÂ* has flooded my virtual node using fiber optic network backbone.

They're now downloading movies in just .5 seconds.

    http://hikari.softbankbb.co.jp/

60 Gbps to 1 GbpsÂ* gigabyte per second.

    Japans Lightspeed Tech

I still see bumper sticker that say's "eat my dust".Â* hahaÂ* how does one phrase using light?

eat my optics. eat my light. eat yahoobb. now I'm hungry. brb.

    kbps - kilobit per second
    KBps - kilobyte per second
    Mbps - megabit per second
MBps - mega byte per second
    Gbps - gigabit per second
    GBps - gigabyte per second
