Couple files multi-million suit versus 2 doctors and hospital
    Updated April 02, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - A simple medical procedure that has allegedly gone awry has led a couple to file a multi-million damage suit against two doctors and the hospital where the patient was confined.
An executive of Globe Telecom and her husband have filed a damage suit against Cebu Doctors University Hospital and two doctors, who allegedly performed a wrong operation June last year.
Katrina Lilia Morada-Poca, her husband Roberto Rama Poca and Katrina’s Mother Alice Canonoy Morada filed charges of medical malpractice, tort and damages against Cebu Doctors University Hospital, Inc., obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Marivic Tan and surgeon Dr. Manuel Villamor before the Regional Trial Court yesterday after having been confined for over a month last year.

Katrina, in her complaint said that in their desire to have a baby, in May 2008, she and her husband Roberto had eggs from Katrina’s ovary fertilized with the sperms of her husband to be later implanted in her womb, a medical procedure known as in-vitro fertilization.
When the embryos were ready for implantation, Dr. Tan, whom Katrina had known since her college years, told Katrina that a mass containing water called ‘hydrosalpinx’ was found in the patient’s left fallopian tube.

Tan apparently told her that the mass should be removed as it might adversely affect the implantation of the fertilized embryos.

Dr. Tan ordered for a video-laparascopy which is said to be a minor operation.
Katrina said that she was assured that the operation will only take 45 minutes to one hour. The procedure was done on June 12 of last year at Dr. Tan’s clinic.

The complainant alleged that the procedure led to several complications and Dr. Tan asked Dr. Villamor to help her as she reportedly claimed that it was beyond her competence.

Katrina had to undergo another operation two days later by another doctor due to complications and another ten days after the first.

She underwent a fourth operation to repair the damage in her body and when she finally was discharged from the hospital on July 9, her bill reached P2 million.

After leaving the hospital the victim still had to undergo therapy sessions.

The complainants are asking for P2.1 million in actual damages and P400,000 for expenses incurred.

They are also asking P5 million for moral damages and P500,000 each for Roberto and Katrina’s mother.

Another P1 million has been asked for exemplary damages and P300,000 for attorney’s fees.

hi, share pud ko. when i was 15, now ill be 22, i was diagnosed to have pcos, my OB was Dr. Paņares of CHH. my main symptom was pms, i underwent utz then i saw more than 10 cyts on both side of my ovaries. after that, she prescribed me oral contraceptive pills for 6months (gracial). my menses were cool, "normal" and i didnt have any pms. unfortunately, just last year, my symptoms came back. went back to her and asked for another prescription. i wished to have few of the cysts eliminated coz im preparing my self for pregnancy (i know its too early but i better start now that later). she prescribed me metformin, still for 6mos. worse comes to worst, 1mo after taking metformin i had my menstruation. i thought it was just normal, but 1week passed, my mens was still heavy and i had it for a month. it was like a break through bleeding and if i dint get any help, i wouldve been dead by now. i developed lactic acidosis (life-threatening condition: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting) and i became hypoglycemic, i lost so much blood that i was admitted for a week and 1liter of blood was tranfused and i took meds to stop the bleeding (hemostan) and some estrogens. the cool thing about taking the meds was actually seeing the cysts that come out during my mens, the size was bigger than a 1php coin. but the rest was not cool.. until now, the cysts are still inside me. i wanna be treated coz i dont wanna have endometrial Ca.. i had myself vaccinated for cervical Ca, its only 2,500 at Dr. in CHH, i forgot her name, her clinics on the 5th floor, just few doors from Dr. Young's (a dentist) clinic.

anyways, can anyone share their ways of at least minimizing the pcos? alternative treastments, aside sa tubig, low simple carbohydrate, low animal product, high fiber diet
    , exercise..

also, on Dr. Tan, naunsa na ilang case? uhm... wala tingay naminaw ang patient, adversely affect gani..
i feel sorry for her, but still, i wanna meet Dr. Tan ^^

I was also diagnosed last year of having a PCOS but I just took metformin a couple of months ago since me and my husband wants to have a baby. Right now, ga take napud ko ug fertility pill which is Clomid and hopefully this will work this time kay wala man na treat sa metformin. I am also determine to lose weight kay medyo ni gain man sad ko.

I just knew that daghan man diay ta naa ani nga syndrome. But if God willing jud, one day ma blessed ra jud ta ug baby.

Don't lose hope ladies, we'll get through this.
