my best trips have always been the ones i did alone. if going outside the country, i would suggest you visit lonelyplanet.com or get one of their books. their recommendations have always been quite helpful for me. i remember that stay in ho chi minh, where i arrived past midnight and asked the driver to bring me to this hotel the website recommended. it was in this seemingly shady side of the city and i had to go through several side streets before reaching the hotel. you could just imagine my panic when i saw that the so-called hotel seemed like a 5 storey haunted house. i was hesitant and thought about using my emergency money to book myself a room at the sheraton or something. but i was too tired and too sleepy so i figured a night there shouldn't hurt. the caretaker brought me to a surprisingly spacious room with 2 queen beds and an enormous toilet and bath with a tub and complete amenities... breakfast the following day was in a nice, cozy, dining table, where you sit withe fellow guests who are mostly backpackers and have lots of stories to tell. i also later found out, that the place i booked was strategically near the restaurants, markets and shopping center. it was so convenient for me especially since i had several cooking classes while i was there. i ended up staying in the same hotel the whole time i was in ho chi minh.
