• Vispop – calling for entries

The Visayan Pop Songwriting Competition (Vispop) is back for its sixth installment. It prides itself as a continuing celebration of local music and talent. Since 2013, it has promoted homegrown Visayan talents nationwide.

The idea of Vispop emerged in 2009. The Artist Ko Multipurpose Cooperative and the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers conceptualized it. Cebuano Songwriters and artists Jude Gitamondoc, Ian Zafra, Cattski Espina, and Lorenzo Niñal founded the competition. Since it was first staged in 2013, it has brought Visayan music to the hearts of Filipinos. It became an avenue to bring the Visayan language and music to the public.

This year’s competition is supported by the Sacred Heart School for Boys – Batch 1985 Foundation, Inc. Established in 2011, the foundation puts the Jesuit ideals of being “men for others” into action. They make significant contributions to promoting local arts, entertainment, talents, tourism, and a sense of community.

For this year, Vispop is calling on songwriters and musicians to share their musical abilities. The submission period for entries is from March 1 to May 7.

Submit your entries to www.visayanpop.com. Each songwriter can submit three entries. The top six finalists will be chosen from all the contestants. These finalists are to compete at the Finals Night on July 27 at the Oakridge Pavillion.

The criteria for judging include Music (30%), Lyrics (30%), and Over-all Impact (40%). The last criterion includes musical treatment, commercial appeal, radio-friendliness, uniqueness, and breakthrough qualities.

The winner of Vispop 5.0 last year was Kung Di Pa Lang Ko Buang. Chai Fonacier wrote and performed the song. Coming in second place was Kung Di Man Gani Kita. It was written by Jerika Teodorico, and performed by Davelyn Cuenco. Third place was Kurog Ko. It was written by Jeremy Sarmiento, and performed by Jetz Tacsanan.
