• Vispop 5 Levels Up

On its fifth run, Vispop a local songwriting competition is moving up to a whole new level. Vispop set of finalists gives a new meaning to Visayan pop with their songs telling a story of fear, frustration, anger, confusion, joy, and love.

L-R: Jude Gitamondoc, Insoy Niñal, and Ian Zafra

During the press launch of Vispop 5 held last June 29, Vispop Project Director, Insoy Niñal shared how they screen entries.

“We had about 360 plus entries which took us ten hours straight to listen to all the songs in its entirety. Then we would arrive with a shortlist of twenty then down to six final songs through a voting process among the screening committee members. That’s how long and tedious the screening process is because we respect the work of each songwriter.” said Niñal.

The quality of entries submitted each year is improving. This drives the organizing committee to level up.

“Songwriters nowadays are getting better each year. We are just here to receive the entries that they submit. When we do the workshops, we always tell the songwriters that the future of Vispop is in their hands. If you give us lousy songs, we’ll produce them as such but what is really happening year after year is that the entries have really improved. So it all boils down to their creativity. Since we are getting better songs every year, we level up with the production, lyric videos and the way we handle the event,” says Jude Gitamondoc, Vispop Musical Director.

The fans have grown in huge numbers since the first kick-off of Vispop four years ago. And not only people from the Visayas and Mindanao have embraced the Vispop genre but they already get responses from Manila, Luzon and even from different parts of the world.
