• Is Valentine's Day like any Other Day?

Is Valentineís Day just like any other day?

We talked about it before hand, and agreed to just stay in on the 14th of February for dinner and DVDs. That was exactly what we did last Hearts' Day.

Some couples were brave enough to go out last Feb 14 and celebrate with a fancy dinner, watch a romantic movie, a nice concert or have drinks at some chic bar. Thereís absolutely nothing wrong with that, just that weíre not like them nor will we ever be. Although, we might change our mind in a few years, so let me retract and say this instead: thatís not how we roll, at least for now.

Anyway, there are also those jaded couples that opted to skip Valentineís Day altogether. We are also not like them for no matter how simple our plans were, I believe that still counts as an effort to spend time together today. So letís just say that if thereís such a thing as a couple-meter, the arrow would remain in the middle which simply means we belong between mushy and worn-out.

Would it then be alright to conclude that weíre normal? Well, a lot of grey area lies on the subject of normalcy, but kidding aside, Iíd like to think we classify as a normal couple.

After our DVD night he had to head home early since we are both working the next day. When he left my house, thatís when I started to think about our relationship and also what I think I know about other peopleís relationships. You see, you can never be too sure with some people for looks can be deceiving but my opinions are based on what other couples has showed me. My friends and relatives are the only exception, but for the rest, Iím well aware that itís none of my business to find out what theyíre really going through. So Iíll have to base it from a spectatorís point of view.

Iím sorry for all the disclaimers before going straight to the point. Itís just that sometimes; you just got to be careful. So back to what I was thinking about, well, it was more like asking myself some hypothetical questions. If he sent me a bouquet of flowers today like what most of my co-workerís paramour did, would that make me happy? Probably, I thought. Except, take note that Iím already happy. And since he didnít send any? (Thatís part of what we agreed upon pre-Valentineís Day), honestly, Iím still the same happy person. See what a waste of money that would have been, when Iím certain my feelings and current state will remain the same with or without flowers and what-have-youís.

So then I got to think about the other couples. Did flowers and other fancy things make a difference in their relationship today? For those who are facing challenges, did these gifts help them? If they did make a difference, thatís great. Thereís always the rule and the exception, itís up to you to categorize where you belong. So if the things I mentioned were given to you and yet that didnít make a difference to your relationship, why did your partner bother in the first place? Well, I always make it a point to recognize that different strokes work on different folks. I just couldnít help but think about it, since wasting time, effort and especially money is a no-no on my book. Then again, thereís that belief that ďItís the thought that countsĒ.

Okay, enough wondering and time to go back to my own relationship before I enter dreamland. So about tonight, Iím really happy we agreed not to go overboard and go to a public place for that ďspecialĒ commemoration dinner and use gifts to declare our love for each other. We were just calm about this day and based on experience, being calm is a million times better than heavy drama or even worse, being bitter. Although if you ever met us, youíd probably say we act like high school sweethearts 24/7. Trust me on that for weíve been told so many times, making our friends real close to puking when weíre around. True that we act like high school sweethearts sans the showering each other with gifts, but what some donít know is that we are also like a couple on their 50th year Ė so in-love, contented and at ease with each other and this world that we live in. That, for me is more than enough and is a state which needs no bouquet of roses and fancy dinners to enjoy.

If youíre reading this, even if I told you not to (long story, guys), well you ought to know that I feel Valentineís Day for us was just like any other day. . Because today, just like any other day, Iím still the same person who feels so blessed to be able to love and be loved by someone as wonderful as you.

      Love,

valentines' day should not be limited to 1 day a year only. every day should be an opportunity to show you love or care someone. and it's the simplest of things that makes memories worthwhile..

happy for your love life, sis!
