• Philippines Australia Friendship Day in Cebu

      The celebration of the Philippines Australia Friendship Day is held in different parts of the country every year. This year, it was in Cebu. Attending the event was Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Steven Robinson AO.

      The Philippines Australia Friendship Day is every May 22. A Presidential Proclamation in 2016 declared this. This year, the event is part of the Australia Now celebration all over the ASEAN. The event comprised of six key activities. First, the Philippines-Australia Forum. The forum discussed critical issues like innovation and social inclusion. Speakers featured were from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia’s Edith Cowan University, and the Australian Digital Commerce Association. The Cebu Chamber of Commerce co-presented the forum. Second, the friendly adaptive Dragon Boat race. His Excellency Steven Robinson AO joined the Philippine Accessible Disability Services, Inc. (PADS) in this race. It was at the bayfront of Il Corso Filinvest Lifemalls. Third, the launch of Fundlife Leadership Academy: Girls Advancement and Protection. The Ambassador opened the first football tournament under the program. The goal of this program is to use sports to help develop leadership skills among girls. It is part of the Embassy’s work to promote gender equality. Fourth, the Ambassador met with scholars under the Scholarship for Teacher Education Programs to Upgrade Teacher Quality in the Philippines (STEP UP). Fifth, the Ambassador joined the Executive General Manager of QBE Group Shared Services Center, Mark Woolfrey, at the company’s Brigada Eskwela at the Bagong Lipunan Elementary School.

      The Philippines Australia Friendship Day ended on May 25 with activities at the Activity Center of Ayala Center Cebu. Guests enjoyed an interactive exhibit, a fashion parade, an outdoor concert, and a film screening. The Embassy also held information sessions.
