• Hunat Sugbu 5: Because I Can

Hunat Sugbo, Dagan Para ni Maning is running on its fifth year as it unfolds four race categories: 3K, 6K, 12K and 21K to be held on June 21, 2015 at The Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu. The proceeds of the annual memorial run for Cebu Parklane International Hotel’s late president, Manuel Ting, go to CPIH’s Medical-Surgical-Dental-Optical Mission which will be held on a weekend before the hotel’s anniversary, July 12.

In the past when they started out, they only catered to 500-600 patients. And last year, they broke their own record and were able to cater almost 2,000 patients from neighboring barangays even as far as Talisay and Lapu-Lapu City through the joint efforts of all the LGU’s (local government units) and in partnership with Jesu Christi Community and the Gualandi Volunteer Service.

They also tapped medical teams from Cebu Doctor’s University, Chong Hua Hospital, Southwestern University, Gullas College of Medicine and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. That’s why Hunat Sugbo is not only for the advocacy of health and fitness but it is also organized for a worthy cause.

Hunat Sugbu also seeks to be inspired by all the runners and in return will be able to inspire others to run, as well. This holds true to this year’s theme, Because I Can, “reaching out to all people to not only to run but to find more meaning in running and for those who are not running yet, to find a reason to run – and that is the challenge that Hunat Sugbu is trying to throw out to the people,” said CPIH’s General Manager, Ms. Cenelyn Manguilomotan.

In terms of the route, Mr. Joel Baring, on his fourth year as race director, has tweaked some changes to give a new “playground” to the runners. Most regular runners are seeking for new routes to run since there are a lot of races in Cebu that year after year has the exact same route to the extent that the runners already memorize the road or street. This is a challenge to him to find new race routes because he aims each year will be different.

Registration is now ongoing at the lobby of Cebu Parklane International Hotel. Dates and information on online and mall registration will be announced later. Registration fee comes with a cool dri-fit shirt, buffet at the finish line and medal for 12K and 21K finishers.

“Energy drinks will be served for the 12K runners while the 21K runners will not only enjoy energy drinks but they will also be provided with sponges throughout the race. There will be more exciting surprises in store for all the registered runners,” said Mr. Nic Nacorda, Hunat Sugbo Chairman.

More than two thousand runners are expected to join this year in all categories. At the end of the race, a special prize will be given to the youngest and oldest runner, as practiced from their previous races five years ago. Deadline of registration is on a week before the race event.

The race results will be posted a day after the race in their website, www.hunatsugbu.com and in their official Facebook page, www.facebook.com/hunatsugbu.

In a nutshell, Hunat Sugbu is organzied with the hope that runners will not only aim for a personal record to beat or clamor for medals at the end of the race but they would be motivated to face any obstacles they may face headstrong BECAUSE THEY CAN finish the race at any cost. And that’s what running is all about.
