• Gloria Sevilla headlines 'Nang Em' in Cinemalaya 2020

There's no stopping the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Festival in celebrating its 16th anniversary, even during a pandemic.

For the first time, the festival organizers are taking the event into digital edition from August 7 to August 16, 2020.

One of the short films to look forward is the Visayan short film "Nang Em" top-billed by veteran and 88-year old Cebuana actress Gloria Sevilla along with Manu Respall and Jolevs Domingo.

"Nang Em" which is directed and written by Sevilla's daughter Maria S. Ranillo will be streamed on Vimeo at 2 p.m. on August 11, 2020.

According to Cinemalaya's official website, "Nang Em" is a 19-minute documentary, comedy, and drama short film.

It talks about an 85-year-old Cebuana named Nang Em (Sevilla) who survived alone during the quarantine era.

Even if she suffers from depression and anxieties, Nang Em will show how to fight the negativities.

Sevilla is dubbed as the Queen of the Visayan Movies. Her first movie was "Princess Tirana" with Matt Ranillo Jr., in 1951.

A Cebu's pride, she headlined other movies like Badlis sa Kinabuhi (1969), Gimingaw Ako (1973), “Once Upon a Time in Manila” (1994), “Kay Tagal kang Hinintay” (199, “El Presidente” (2012), and “Boy Golden, Shoot to Kill: The Arturo Porcuna Story” (2013).

Before "Nang Em", Sevilla also starred in "Pagbalik", an official entry of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019.

"Nang Em" is one of the three short films under the "Premiere-Shorts" category for the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Festival along with "Basurero" by Eileen Cabiling and "Heneral Rizal" by Chuck Guiterrez.

Last Tuesday, August 7, Cinemalaya's official Facebook page announced 175 feature films that made it to the master list of this year's film festival.

Aside from the "Premiere-Shorts", other categories for the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Festival are the Main Competition, Visions of Asia, Dokyu (Documentary), Indie-Nation Shorts, Indie-Nation Full Length, Gawad Alternatibo, Emergent Media, Cinemalaya Retrospective Short Films, Cinemalaya Retrospective - Full-Length Features, Digital Classic, Allied Festival, Cinemalaya Campus Shorts, and Experiments During Quarantine.
To watch the online streaming, Cinemalaya bundles are now offered at P150 (basic), P200 (standard), P350 (premium), P75 (regular), P150 (triple feature).

Film enthusiasts may visit https://vimeo.com/ondemand and search the keywords Cinemalaya 16 where the bundles are available for purchase.

Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is co-produced by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Cinemalaya Foundation Inc.

According to its official Facebook page, it was first established on July 12 to July 17, 2005.

The film festival serves as a concrete means to achieve its purpose to discover and develop a new breed of filmmakers. (Michelle Joy Padayhag )
