• BAETAS gets aid

To preserve and protect the Bojo River and marine resources of Tanon Strait, and to provide supplemental income to the residents, the Municipality of Aloguinsan create the Bojo Aloguinsan Ecotourism Association (BAETAS).

Today, BAETAS is run by a group of fishermen and housewives who facilitate river tour activities, including on-site ecological lectures on mangroves and birds and handicraft-making demos. They also serenade visitors over lunch. Before becoming members of the group, invited residents joined a series of trainings, seminars and capacity-building activities over a period of five months. There are already 40 active members at present.

The Bojo River has been a source of supplemental livelihood for Aloguinsan residents. The members reported alternately at Bojo River each day. If there are guests, they have income. If there are no guests, they do clean ups, maintenance and other activities.
However, due to #COVID19 , Aloguinsan closed all tourist destinations and recreational facilities to curb the spread of the virus, thus temporarily suspending the livelihood of BAETAS members.

But even in the face of the pandemic, BAETAS members have not turned their backs on the barangays and the LGU. Despite difficulties because of the suspension of their livelihood, many of them have volunteered to augment the LGU's manpower deployed at their Quarantine Control Points (QCP). Currently, the LGU has three primary QCPs and five secondary QCPs, where they screen the people who go in and out of the municipality, using necessary documents, IDs and certifications as reference.

In exchange, the BAETAS volunteers received relief goods from the LGU and the barangay. “Since the Bojo River is closed, they thought of devoting their time to a worthwhile cause. By being volunteers, they are helping the LGU and the people of Aloguinsan amid this trying time of global health crisis,” shares Shane, Aloguinsan tourism officer. #ParaSaBayan #PeopleOfSmartCommunities
