Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino hosted a grand gathering to celebrate the coming of the Year of the Metal Rat. Every year, the hotel takes celebrating Chinese New Year to different heights. Chinese traditions, cuisines, and performances brought the event to life.
The hotel’s general manager Anders Hallden welcomed guests to the ceremony. Alongside Hallden were Chinese Consul Attache Jian Wen and Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama. Cebu businesswoman Mary Anne Alcordo-Solomon and the hotel’s new Executive Chef Gilbert Alan Mathay also welcomed guests.
The festivities began with the eye-dotting ceremony. This symbolizes the awakening of a new lion. The Wu Shu Federation of the Philippines Cebu Chapter performed the traditional lion and dragon dance. After the dance, pancit was mixed and served. Pancit is the dish for long life. At 9 PM, the celebration ended with a bang. The grand finale was the Fire in the Sky fireworks display. Truly the highlight of the night, it featured hits of the movie The Greatest Showman. Colors and lights illuminated the night sky to welcome the Lunar New Year. Pyroworks International Inc. creatively prepared the fireworks display.
Tin Gow, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, was decorated with red lanterns and red envelopes. These decorations bring prosperity and good luck. For the Year of the Metal Rat, the restaurant offered special set menus on January 24 and 25. The menu featured braised abalone with pork knuckles, roasted duck, and stir-fried prawns with tomato sauce. Two variations of Yee Sang—prawn and salmon—were also available. Tikoy came in four different flavors: brown sugar, almond, pandan, and ube.
