Actually, learning from your employee on a business that you were supposed to know in the first place is a BIG mistake. One should not expect that everything will be taught by an employee. Try learning from a different source (not the internet). Enrolling in a cooking class is a better idea.

You might not be the chef but you have a better understanding of the business. In fact, in your business you should be the one who is the most knowledgeable among your staff. Someone that your employees will respect because you have a good grasp on the craft and the business-side of your restaurant. While I agree that delegating tasks is a must, during the early stages of a business however, there are certain things that you will have to do yourself.

On the other hand there are entrepreneurs who are hands-on with their restaurants like Wolfgang Puck, Gene Gonzales and Tsai Ming are but a few successful chefs who are still busy in the kitchen.

Its all about creating a bond with your employees, your getting to know them at the same time your learning. you will even find out what are the common problems your employees are facing. its called getting your hands dirty.
if your thinking dat you should know better than your employees thats wrong...
it should be the employee who should know better than you in that perticular line of work.
now being knowledgeable means you know how to manage the whole organization.
bringing out the best in your employee is the best asset in your company...... so let them do their job and motivate them to learn and do it better.
and again you dont need to be a chef to ba able to open a food biz. now being a chef gives you an advantage but not a requirement.
wolf gang and all the others are already chef before they engage in business... its an advantage.
i know a frend who operates a spa. he doesnt even know how to massage or about the spa industry when he started.

getting your hands dirty is totally different from creating a bond with an employee. there are other ways and means of learning what problems your employees face on a day to day basis. And learning the skill way ahead before even opening a business gives you a head start in knowing these things thus you'll be able to provide the solution even before the business has started.

Which would you prefer? Creating a solution when the problem is already there? or Having the solution already at hand even before the problems arise?

It really depends on how technical the line of work is. But ideally, the business owner should know ever facet of the business.

but do you let them do their work even if it is not within the company standards? and how can you set these standards if you do not know the craft? who will set the standards? the employee?

and again you dont need to be a chef to ba able to open a food biz. now being a chef gives you an advantage but not a requirement.

They became chefs with the intention of putting up a business. It was the advantage.

Have even wondered about the nature of your friend's company? is it a corporation? is it a partnership or a single proprietor? is the business a franchise? there are different factors why your friend is doing well with the spa.

You see being an entrepreneur does not mean that you just sit back, relax, let the money just run the business and manage the organization. It actually takes a long while before you even reach that point, unless of course you have tons of money that you just keep hiring people to delegate tasks. But for unfortunate souls like us, we have to learn how each and every single facet of the business works (this includes learning the crafts that runs the business i.e. cooking) and get our hands dirty.
