DJ's and their "LIVE" performance...

Those who listen to EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and dubstep like I do, I'm sure there was a point in time in which you would be imagining what it would be like to be up on stage or in the DJ booth mixing and creating music then waving your hands and shouting to people to do the same. Well, hate to rain on your parade but you have been deceived. I'm gonna be doing a reblog or excerpt from deadmau5 on his post "United we fail, we all hit play". Ill post the direct link at the end of this post. This explains the "show" and "skill" that DJs possess to leave us in awe while in a party mood.

From "United we fail, we all hit play":

its no secret. when it comes to “live” performance of EDM… that’s about the most it seems you can do anyway. It’s not about performance art, its not about talent either (really its not) In fact, let me do you and the rest of the EDM world button pushers who f*ckin hate me for telling you how it is, a favor and let you all know how it is.

I think given about 1 hour of instruction, anyone with minimal knowledge of ableton and music tech in general could DO what im doing at a deadmau5 concert. Just like i think ANY DJ in the WORLD who can match a beat can do what “ANYONE else” (not going to mention any names) is doing on their EDM stages too.

okay, so heres me, in a big silly mousehead.. twiddlin a knob or somethin… okay so heres how it works…. Somewhere in that mess is a computer, running ableton live… and its spewing out premixed (to a degree) stems of my original productions, and then a SMPTE feed to front of house (so tell the light / video systems) where im at in the performance… so that all the visuals line up nicely and all the light cues are on and stuff. Now, while thats all goin on… theres a good chunk of Midi data spitting out as well to a handful of synths and crap that are / were used in the actual production… which i can tweak *live* and whatnot… but doesnt give me alot of “lookit me im jimi hendrix check out this solo” stuff, because im constrained to work on a set timeline because of the SMPTE. Its a super redundant system, and more importantly its reliable as F*CK! And obviously, ive done the show a couple hundred times easily by now, so the focus over the past few runs with the “cube show” has been more revolved around adding new audio / visual content to keep it current.

so thats my “live” show. and thats as “live” as i can comfortably get it (for now anyway) of course itll evolve, and change up, but im sure a few key principles will always remain the same.
Im just so sick of hearing the “NO!!! IM NOT JUST DOING THIS, I HAVE 6 TABLES UP THERE AND I DO THIS THIS AND THIS" like… honestly. who gives a f*ck? i dont have any shame in admitting that for "unhooked” sets.. i just roll up with a laptop and a midi controller and “select” tracks n hit a spacebar. ableton syncs the sh*t up for me… so no beatmatching skill required. “beatmatching” isnt even a f*cking skill as far as im concered anyway. so what, you can count to 4. cool. i had that skill down when i was 3, so dont give me that argument please.

my “skills” and other PRODUCERS skills shine where it needs to shine… in the goddamned studio, and on the f*cking releases. thats what counts… because this whole big “edm” is taking over fad, im not going to let it go thinking that people assume theres a guy on a laptop up there producing new original tracks on the fly. becausje none of the “top dj’s in the world” to my knowledge have. myself included.

you know what makes the EDM show the crazy amazing show that it is? you guys do, the fans, the people who came to appreciate the music, the lights, all the other people who came, we just facilitate the means and the pretty lights and the draw of more awesome people like you by our studio productions. which is exactly what it is. But to stand up and say youre doing something special outside of a studio environment, when youre not, just plain f*ckin annoys me.

Best Western Lex Hotel

We decided to kick back, relax and stay one night at Best Western Lex Hotel. We booked through Expedia online as we always do when travelling, really won't talk about the price since that is objective. A one night stay grants you unlimited use of the facilities like the roof deck swimming pool and the gym located juz besides the pool. It also gives you a complimentary breakfast (buffet), well get to the details on those things later on. Let's talk bout the place first.

I'm kinda torn bout the location actually, it might seem good to the foreigners since it is accessible to most major places that they need to go to (Ayala, downtown, uptown, Osmena Blvd, etc...), I don't find it to my liking since there's no good view and looks very hectic once you step out of the hotel, but that's juz me. The hotel is actually clean though small once you get the hang of it, service in the lobby is good, or average. Once we were given the key cards, we went straight to the hotel room, the room was kinda small but clean and the bed was okay, big and not too soft, the AC though is kinda slow to work. Requested room service for the heck of it, and it was fast, so no complaints there.

One of the main reasons why we planned to check in was to go swimming, so after 15 mins of checking the room, we went directly to the roof deck to take a dip in the pool. Now, before I go to that part, I'm gonna give now the part where I'm most pissed off about the hotel... the elevator. The elevators are small, but that's okay with me and it was fast, so that's good. What I'm mostly pissed off about is how to operate it, granted, like any other hotels, you need the key card to operate it, but unlike any other hotels, this one requires you to slide it in for every time you need to press the floor buttons. Most elevators only require you to slide to open or start it, not do it for every frickin time you need to do something. Now that that's out of the way, well go to the pool then. Pool depth is juz 4 feet, which is good in my opinion, not too deep and not too shallow (which is important since I have my baby girl with me.), though its really not that big, more like a badminton court size or something. Its clean, not really crystal clear but still... clear. Not open 24 hours though, only from 6am till 10pm. The view is great from where you'll be swimming since it gives you a 360 degrees view of Cebu (maybe not full 360 but you get the idea.). Food served in the roof deck is okay, albight a bit expensive (160 something for a juice drink), but the food tastes good.

The main part I was actually looking forward to is the breakfast, I wasn't sure when they said free breakfast included if its a buffet or juz room service so I double checked and my heart jumped up and down when informed it was a buffet. If I was to rate the overall buffet experience, I'd say a 3.5 out of 5. Since it was breakfast, the only thing that glued to my mind is BACON! And lo and behold, there it was, unlimited bacon. It was a bit of a disappointment though, the bacon did taste good but not what I was actually expecting. Its not that crispy and the taste is not satisfying, it tastes good, juz not satisfying. What stood out there was the pork with tomato sauce (like menudo or something, forgot the name), the dish is absolute heaven. The reason why is the meat so friggin tender, its like you don't need to chew it, juz press it between the tongue and the roof of your mouth and it melts, simply delicious and amazing. They also have breakfast cereals and milk to go along with it, my all time favorite and also my baby girls' all time favorite... boiled egg, porridge, pancakes, salami, cheese, cakes, bulad, tapa, sausage and lotsa other breakfast stuff. We also invited a friend of ours to come swim, of course his not included in our itinerary so he needed to pay for his use. We found out that for a day use in the pool, it's 350php. We also asked how much it would cost for the morning buffet, I forgot the exact amount but I believed they said 320 something.

My experience with Best Western Lex is good, but not to the point that its very memorable, there are other hotels in which I would highly recommend more. Ill rate the hotel a 3 out of 5.

Handuraw Food Trip

The reason why I’m writing about Handuraw, even though it’s very common and a lot of people has already been there, is because I ate there like two times in a row in a single week… and I’m also bored as hell right now. The branch that we went to was main one near UP, I never had any idea that they actually have other branches which means I’ve never been to any of the other ones. Me and my family and friends went to Handuraw for my daughter’s birthday and second was juz to chill and hang around with my partner and daughter along with my brother who’s in vacation here in Cebu. Before I start, I juz wanna give a heads up that my means of payment to the establishment was gift vouchers (and some cash for the excess).

On my daughter’s birthday, we ordered a lot of food since there are like 10 -15 of us. From what I remember, the pizzas that we ordered are the Hawaiian, Meat lover and Handuraw Special (there might be some other ones but I don’t remember), they serve thin crust. The one that stood out was the Hawaiian, the sweet blend and tomato sauce are juz perfect. The dish that I ordered myself since I wanna try was the Nilagang Baka (Beef Stew with Clear Broth), a personal favorite of mine. Unfortunately though, I was a bit disappointed. The flavor of the broth was okay, juz the correct blend of a little spice and saltiness. What disappointed me though was the beef, it was a bit hard (trust me, I eat beef a lot so I know what I’m talking about), like rubbery, and sort of like…dry, and coz of that, it tasted bland. The vegetable with it is the same, bland and somewhat dry (like wilted or something). One dish that stood out that my friends ordered was the Buffalo Wings. Simply saying, it tasted good, really good. Not too hot that my baby girl can handle it, but still with a good tangy bite on your tongue. And the sweetness is just the right way, not like from those other stores where it can give you tonsillitis. Another food was the fried Bangus (Milkfish) sliced in half in the middle. One of the biggest factors for me when eating fish is if it would actually smell like a fish, and good thing for this is it didn’t (you know what I mean). The taste was good, too good in fact that I had to finish even the scales. My partner ordered a Pasta Bolognese for my daughter, mind you I’m not a big fan of pasta so I really didn’t get to taste it, but I think it was good since my 3 year old daughter finished the whole plate, the presentation of the food was also very nice. There were a lot of other food that my friends ordered but those were the only ones that really stood out for me to remember.

I’m sure most of you are aware that Handuraw is well known also because of its music scene, a lot of well known musicians have played here and some even gained their following thru this place, but I usually eat outside though coz I cant stand crowded places but that event was an exception. If you notice, I haven’t mentioned anything regarding the drinks, unfortunately, yours truly only drinks water! Heheheh, I know, boring. For the second time we went there to juz hang out, we mostly ordered pizza with the new additional flavor of All Cheese. That pizza was okay and delicious but it got kinda boring to eat after a few slice. All the other food that was ordered was the same as the last time like the pasta for my daughter, my partner ordered something different for herself though which is Pork Binaguongan (Pork in Shrimp Paste, a favorite dish of hers). I asked to taste it, and it was actually very good, the pork was cooked to a crisp but not overcooked, the vegetables used complimented the dish and it was a bit spicy which is good, the only thing I didn’t like about it is since I’m not a big fan of tomatoes, the tomatoes used were sliced big, but it isn’t such a big deal coz that’s a personal preference.

All in all, I’ll rate the overall experience I had with the place with 5 as the highest, a 4.
