CEBU CITY – As a way of thanking their fans, newly-crowned Liga Pilipinas First Conference champions M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos will play an exhibition game against the Red Bull Barakos of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) this Friday (September 26) at the New Cebu Coliseum. Game time is at 6:00 PM.
M. Lhuillier coach Yayoy Alcoseba will field the same roster that won the historic first Liga Pilipinas title last week at the expense of the Taguig Batang Global, 3-0. Leading the way for the Ninos will be Liga Pilipinas Most Valuable Player Marlon Basco, Bruce Dacia and Stephen Padilla.
Completing the Ninos’ roster are Woodraw Enriquez, Danny Aying, Ron Capati, Jercules Tangkay, Mark Ababon, Ian Saladaga, Rino Berame, Ariel Mepana, Ronald Bucao, Jerry Cavan and Jayford Rodriguez.
Meanwhile, the Barakos of Coach Yeng Guiao will feature Cyrus Baguio of Iligan City and other Vis-Min players in Cebuano guard Warren Ybanez and rookie shooter Jeff Chan of Bacolod City. In addition, Fil-American forward Mike Hrabak has several relatives in Cebu from his mother’s side.
Aside from Chan, Red Bull Bull tabbed two Liga Pilipinas alumni in the last PBA Rookie Draft in Larry Rodriguez of the Smart-Pampanga Buddies and Anthony Cuevas of Taguig.
The PBA’s 2008-2009 season will open on October 4. Other returnees for the Barakos are 2005 Rookie of the Year Rich Alvarez, Celino Cruz, Jojo Duncil, Magnum Membrere, Leo Najorda and Carlo Sharma. In the last month, the team has traded draft picks for Gabby Espinas from Air21 and signed free agent Paolo Hubalde from Barangay Ginebra and 2005 Coca-Cola draftee Al Magpayo.
Gone from last season’s line-up are Mick Pennisi, Paolo Bugia, Mark Andaya, Francis Adriano and Topex Robinson. Cebuano Junthy Valenzuela of Bogo City was traded to Ginebra midway through the season.
Red Bull has finished in Third Place in the last three PBA conferences dating back to the 2006-2007 season. They have three PBA titles under their belt, the last one coming during the 2005-2006 Fiesta Conference.
M. Lhuillier, Southern Philippines’ most successful ball club, has made it a tradition to play host against PBA teams. In the last two years, they defeated Santa Lucia while losing close games to San Miguel, Talk ‘N Text and Ginebra.
Tickets for Friday’s game will be available at the gate at popular prices.
