Ateneo leads PCC ‘Sweet 16’ Finals
    September 23, 2009, 4:44pm

Ateneo de Manila leads eight schools that have secured spots in the “Sweet 16” Finals of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Championship.

The Blue Eagles, last year’s losing finalists, emerged as the No. 1 team at the close of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) elimination round.

The rest of the UAAP teams that reached the Final Four also made it into the finals, namely: Far Eastern University, University of the East, and University of Santo Tomas.

The semifinalists in the ongoing National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) also booked berths in the PCC finals. They are unbeaten San Sebastian, San Beda College, Jose Rizal University, and Letran.

Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) chairman Reynaldo D. Gamboa said eight more slots would be filled up, including one berth reserved for the champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI).

Seven slots would be disputed in zonal qualifying games set in November in Naga City, Cebu City, and Metro Manila.

Defending champion De La Salle University, which placed fifth in the UAAP, will have to go through zonal qualifying on Nov. 12-14 in Naga City. Adamson University, on the other hand, will compete in the Cebu zonal qualifying on November 4-8.

The fifth and sixth placers in the NCAA will also see action in zonal qualifying. At present, Arellano University Chiefs, College of Saint Benilde Blazers, and Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals are in contention.

All the games in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Championship “Sweet 16” Finals will be covered by the ABS-CBN television network and aired nationwide on Channel 23 with replays on Balls.

PLDT and Smart Communications are the major sponsors of this event.

Wildcats sweep Champs League Minda elims

THE HOLY TRINITY COLLEGE WILDCATS swept the Mindanao eliminations to advance to the zonal qualifying of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Championship League (PCCL).

Powered by Jomar Balmaceda and Meylan Landicho, the Wildcats earned the right to represent Mindanao after tripping the Ateneo de Davao Blue Knights, 96-86, and the Southern City College of Zamboanga Bulldogs, 96-94, and then winning by default over the Cagayan de Oro College Scorpions.

The Wildcats, champions of the General Santos City Intercollegiate, are to represent Mindanao in the zonals set on Nov. 4 to 8 in Cebu City.

Jun Cua, PCCL representative and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas official, said officials forfeited the Scorpions’ earlier triumph over the Wildcats because Cagayan de Oro College fielded two ineligible players.

The PCCL only allows teams to play cagers fielded in their mother leagues in Mindanao.

With the decision, the Wildcats clinched the top spot with a 3-0 slate while the Blue Knights wound up second at 2-1 in the PLDT and Smart-backed eliminations held at the Gaisano gym in Davao City.

The Wildcats will join San Sebastian College-Recoletos Cavite, the Naascu champion; Adamson (UAAP fifth placer) and Arellano University (NCAA fifth placer) in the zonals of the tournament that gathers the top collegiate basketball teams in the country.

The Visayan regional champion and the second to fourth placers of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) will round up the eight competing schools in the Cebu zonals.

Only the top four teams in this leg will advance to the Sweet 16 Finals in Manila.

Newly crowned UAAP champion Ateneo already earned an outright berth in the Sweet 16 along with UAAP runner-up University of the East and semifinalists Far Eastern U and University of Santo Tomas.

NCAA Final Four teams San Sebastian, San Beda, Jose Rizal and Letran also clinched automatic slots.
