Watched my 2-Disc Special Edition, Digitally remastered DVD of the 1968 Stanley Kubrick classic...
2001: A Space Odyssey
...last night...I think I have watched it now for about 67 times, since 1987...yes, the whole 2 hours and 27 minutes of the film. This newly restored version still blows me away. It's a film that:
a) I prefer to watch alone
b) I cry and laugh at the same time (yes, at the same time), in several emotionally moving sequences
c) I can sleep through the long, dragging parts without feeling guilty or a sense of remorse
d) I can jump into any sequence (now referred to as "chapters" in DVD playback parlance) and still enjoy the film until I reach the end.
Watching it is truly a spiritual event for me--if I consider Sagan's "Broca's Brain" to be my Bible, and Sagan himself as my priest (with Stanley Kubrik as acolyte/sacristan), then
2001: A Space Odyssey can very well be my "eucharist" (no offense to Catholics).
