Network rivalry is no problem for Roderick Paulate

Actor-comedian Roderick Paulate's inclusion in GMA-7's upcoming primetime series Rosalinda does not put any wedge on his professional relationship with ABS-CBN.

Although Roderick is not an exclusive talent of ABS-CBN, he has been one of the Kapamilya Network's regular fixtures throughout the years, particularly in sitcoms.

In a conversation with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) at the press conference of Rosalinda last night, June 30, at the Studio 5 of GMA Network Center in Quezon City, Roderick clarified that his position remains the same as it was when he was still with the Lopez-owned network.

"This is just per project basis," said Roderick. His present manager, TAPE Inc. lady boss Malou Choa-Fagar, encouraged the veteran actor-comedian to consider any project that comes his way and accept if he likes it enough.

"If you like the offer, you like the project, do it. Artista ka," Roderick articulated Malou's point-of-view. "I share the same [principle]. Kasi emosyonal ako, e. Gusto ko 'yong project, gusto ko 'yong director, gusto 'yong cast, tapos siya [Malou] na bahala sa deal."

HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIP. Roderick politely informed his ABS-CBN bosses of his decision to work with GMA-7. He said, "I did not burn any bridges. Wala. Welcome ako dun. If they have a good project for me, gagawin ko 'yon."

Curiously, Roderick's Rosalinda stint reunited him with the network's senior vice president for entertainment, Ms. Wilma Galvante.

"To tell you honestly kami ni Wilma, magkasama kami sa Broadcast City. Tapos nung nasa Broadcast City siya, gumagawa na ako ng show sa Channel 7 [Roderick was part of the '80s hit drama series Anna Liza, topbilled by the late child star Julie Vega]. So, nauna ako kay Wilma dito sa Channel 7!" laughed Roderick.

Roderick, who likes to do a game show in the immediate future, will portray the character of a flower-shop owner named Florencio in Rosalinda.

The local adaptation of the hit Mexican series features the tandem of newcomer Carla Abellana and Geoff Eigenmann.

"Very honest," Roderick described Carla. "Siyempre nag-a-adjust pa siya. Pero kung susuportahan, para huwag nerbyusin 'yong bata. Meron siya, e, sa mukha meron siya. Kailangan buksan mo lang, medyo pigil pa nang konti, pero meron [star appeal] 'yong bata."

50 Years, 50 Artists: Celebrating 50 Years of GMA News

Mavie Almeda-Ungco
06/30/2009 | 04:07 PM

| | More
People who work in television produce moving images. But what happens when these images stop moving?

That’s the essence of a new exhibit of photography and art mounted by the people who produce GMA News. “50: Fifty Years of News, Fifty Artists," which opened yesterday in GMA Network’s Timog Avenue building, was organized to mark the half-century anniversary of one of the country’s pioneering news organizations. Madonna and Child - by Joy Madrigal

Many of the pictures appear to have come from the exotic locations and dramatic situations experienced by TV professionals. But rather than the ephemeral feel of TV, this exhibit draws viewers into the contemplative space of a frame.

Joy Madrigal, a program manager in public affairs who previously worked for years as a field producer, shot one stunning example: Her photo featured a young, emaciated child on his mother’s breast while she looked intently into the camera, her right arm showing off a tattoo.

The poverty in the photo evokes a certain melancholy in the viewer, but the strong love and human connection between the mother and child also makes the photo somewhat comforting as well.

The exhibit enabled GMA News and Public Affairs personnel to display their talents in other visual media, such as cameraman Kikoy Rapadas, who is also an accomplished photographer. He captured a scene in “blak en wayt" of children at play but appearing almost abstract, their backs turned to the camera and immersed in water, frozen in time while frolicking in a lake or river.

My Piece of Sky by Marissa Flores

News personnel got exposed to a different side of network executives who contributed photos, such as Vice President and program host Jessica Soho’s peek into her Chinese ancestral village, and Senior Vice President Marissa Flores’s My Piece of Sky, a dreamy image of a staircase that appears to lead to the heavens.

Flores gave the opening remarks, where she said, “We’re 50 years old, and what better way to mark a birthday than to get fifty people together to mount a show of pictures they made in the course of their work, and paintings and sculptures they made to de-stress from the pressures of the work place...this is art with a heart."

While the exhibit featured visual art, the opening was a multimedia affair with news and public affairs personnel performing for their colleagues, including news writer and violinist Rosetti Rivera, saxophonist and Post Production staff, Jeremiah Neil Ramos, Post Production Unit Manager Maritoni Falconi who sang “Sunlight," photographer and poet Vivian Limpin, who gave a reading of her poem “Paglikha," Addy Pareno of Public Affairs who sang “Blue Moon" and Alex del Fierro of Post Production, who sang “Vincent."

The event was also a reunion for some ex-GMA personalities who joined the celebration, such as Tina Monzon-Palma, Antonio D. Seva, Veronica Baluyut-Jimenez, Amado Pineda, Ruben Dela Cruz, Lita Evidente and Fr. Nicanor Lalog II. They hobnobbed with GMA Network CEO Felipe L. Gozon, news anchor and Kapuso Foundation president Mel Tiangco, and other network executives.

The art and photos are for sale, with 20 percent of the proceeds going to the GMA Kapuso Foundation. The exhibit will last until July 10. For queries, contact the organizers, Kelly Vergel de Dios and her staff at 9827777 local 1305 and 3015.

Carla Abellana and Marian Rivera to Star in ‘The Other Man’

Carla Abellana’s first movie is a starring role together with Marian Rivera.

23-year-old Carla Abellana is being groomed by GMA-7 as their next big star via the Philippine remake of the hit Mexican telenovela “Rosalinda.” This is Carla’s very first tv role in a primetime series, and a starring role at that.
The first adapted Mexican telenovela on Philippine television was MariMar and it launched Marian Rivera to super stardom. Marian became the hottest female property of the kapuso network as she had a back-to-back tv series that topped the primetime tv ratings nationwide.
Marian and Carla have so much in common. While the latter is yet to prove her worth, people are expecting that she will shine bright as her mother studio has invested so much for her.
Mother Lily Monteverde, for one, has an eye for potential superstars. She acquired multi-movie deal before with Angel Locsin. And after that, it’s Marian Rivera. Now, the Regal Films matriarch offered a movie deal with Carla Abellana and her co-star is no other than Marian Rivera.
Carla and Marian is starring in the film “The Other Man” which is set to release later this year.
