NINOS AND METEORS RACE TO 2-0 LEADS
Posted August 24th, 2008 by liga CEBU – The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños and the Misamis Oriental Meteors raced to 2-0 leads in the quarterfinal seriers Friday following contrasting victories over separate opponents in the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Playoffs at the Cebu Coliseum. The Niños dumped the Laguna Trace Stallions, 99-74, while the Meteors turned back the vengeful Pagadian Explorers, 84-81, in the tournament sponsored by Smart, Accel, Molten, Metathione, Nature's Spring, Burlington and Laptop Exchange. Game 3 of the Cebu-Laguna best-of-five quarterfinals is set Aug. 25, 6 p.m., at the Trace College gym, homecourt of the Stallions, with the Niños looking to wrap up the series. Meanwhile, Misamis Oriental guns for a sweep of its quarters series and the first semifinal berth when it takes on Pagadian at Xavier University Sunday, while the Iloilo Mang Inasals play host to the Taguig Batang Global at the San Agustin gym, seeking to break a 1-1 tie. Ron Capati led Cebu with 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting while Marlon Basco, who had 20 points in the opener, added 12 points along with Bruce Dacia. The Niños didn't have the kind of trouble that plagued them in Game 1, rolling to a 27-14 lead in the first quarter and blowing up a 56-30 bulge at the half behind a torrid 53 percent shooting. Jerwin Gaco had 19 points for the Stallions, shooting 8 of 11, but got little help in his effort to overcome Cebu's early assault. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Niños leave for Laguna THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños leave today for Los Baños, Laguna where they will try to end the quarterfinal series against the Trace Laguna Stallions at the Trace College Gym. The Niños, the league’s no.1 team, won the first two games here with an average margin of 16 points and will try to close out the series at the opponent’s homecourt. “It’s going to be a tough game for us. We will be playing in a hostile ground but we will try to end the series in Game 3 to avoid any complications,” said Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba. Meanwhile, the Iloilo Mang Inasals gained a head start after beating No.3 seed Taguig Batang Global in Game 3 of their series at the University of San Agustin Gym in Iloilo City. (RCM) Default ILOILO TAKES 2-1 LEAD VS TAGUIG IN QUARTERS Posted August 25th, 2008 by liga ILOILO – Guns blazing from the onset, the Iloilo Mang Inasals had three players scoring 20 points or more Sunday in dealing the Taguig Batang Global a 113-101 defeat and taking a 2-1 lead in the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Playoffs at the San Agustin gym here. Ferdie Go unloaded 21 points with three 3-point shots while Nestor David (3 triples) and Eldrin Senieres (7 of 14 from the floor) each added 20 as Iloilo, cheered by its hometown crowd, stormed to a 41-20 first quarter lead to finish coasting. The Batang Global, who trailed by as many as 25 points, shot a shade better from the field overall and enjoyed a 53-46 rebounds advantage. But 36 fouls were called against them, 31 with awards, from which the Mang Inasals, the 11th seed and sole survivor of the wildcard phase, picked up 55 free throws, converting 34. Taguig was 20 of 29 from the foul line, a disparity in number which it failed to overcome although a valiant rally in the middle two quarters brought it within 87-83 before Iloilo regained command. Niño Marquez buried four three-pointers on the way to 24 points while Ronnie Mathias contributed 23 aside from hauling down a game-high 15 rebounds for the Batang Global who now must win Game 4 late Monday to stave off elimination and regain homecourt advantage in their best-of-five quarterfinal series.
