If BIOS ang guba, your system won't boot even if caps are good.
If your system is booting up but hangs, your caps are defective or the processor is overheating if the system does not respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL. If your system responds to CTRL-ALT-DEL at the point where it hangs up, there is a problem with Windows Registry or the Hard Drive has some hard-to-read sectors. These are only general indications, and to single out the faulty component requires troubleshooting experience, technical expertise, test equipment, and hardware diagnostics utilites. EXPERIENCE is the best teacher. And there is no substitute for actual experience, esp. when repairing mobo and HD. |

SOME HARD FACTS ABOUT HIDDEN HD DEFECTS:
Who says that a brand new HD has no defects or bad sectors? Every brand new HD has defects and bad sectors because it is technically impossible to produce a high-density storage medium for hard drives that is free of surface imperfections. But all these defects have been mapped out of every user's view and Scandisk. But how? Simple enough. Every hard drive is being scanned before it comes out of the factory using ultra-sensitive test equipment for surface imperfections and bad sectors. When found, these defects are recorded in the Defects Table (also known as P-List or Primary List) located at the service area of the platter (also known as servo zone or firmware zone). This firmware zone on the platter's surface is inaccessible to us and to the OS during normal use, but can be directly accessed if you know the vendor-specific ATA commands for that particular brand and model. But what happens when these surface defects get remapped to the Defects Table? Simple again. These defects become invisible to us and to Scandisk but remain visible to the Hard Drive Controller or Logic Board. And these defects are skipped by the IDE Controller during normal operation of the hard drive. That is why the HD would appear to us as DEFECT-FREE and functions normally. And what's bad about hiding these defects to the Defects Table? NOTHING BAD ABOUT IT. Humans are just being realistic and resourceful about the problem. At least we have a brand new HD that can serve us for long if handled properly. And HD manufacturers even provide us with warranty. AND WOULD HIDDEN DEFECTS APPEAR AGAIN AS BAD SECTORS? NEVER for the rest of the HD's life, for as long as the firmware zone does not become corrupted. And why do new defects develop through normal use? And how does the IDE Controller hide these from our view? Simple. Due to wear & tear. And every IDE HDD maintains a pool of spare sectors (600 to 3000 of them, depending on HD size) to replace those newly developed bad sectors, and so keeping these new defects still hidden to us and to Scandisk. But what if the pool of spare sectors become depleted through normal use? What happens to the new defects? This is no longer simple. Since the Grown Defects Table (or G-List) is now overflown, Scandisk could now see them as REALLY BAD. And then you notice that your HD is no longer functioning normally or tends to overheat upon use, and later on you realize that you can no longer PARTITION or FORMAT it. And when the new defects become too numerous, you notice that your HD can no longer be detected by BIOS, etc. Is that the end of the road for your HD? FORTUNATELY NOT... |

If CMOS Jumper is in clear position while PC is on, mobo manufacturers wouldn't advise us to do that as it might cause damage to the board. But I did do that many times in the past but never had any experience with the mobo getting damaged or somehow affected functionally.
The usual configuration is 1-2 for NORMAL position, although I did encounter some mobos with 2-3 as the normal position. |
