It IS because its a Hong Kong Machine. I have the very same problem and its been discussed in many places.

Heres why it doesnt work.

When they released the final code for Resistance, Insomniac were supposedly not aware that sony would be releasing an asian region of the ps3. SO what basically happens is that if you try to connect from this region ie Hong Kong / Taiwan, the resistance will not even attempt to connect to a server. Insomniac have since released a specific region version of this game with updated code that will allow you to play online, but you need the Hong Kong/Taiwan version of the game.

It seems to only be a problem with this one game.

So if you wanna play Resistance online youll need the asian version as the US/JP version will not work.
