PS3 - plays blu-ray and DVD movies, built in wi-fi, supports HDMI, Hard Disk Drive can be upgraded with any laptop HD. Being the superior hardware of this generation you can safely bet that it will last and be supported 10 more years from now. Sony Wand a controller accessory is just around the corner and not expected to be a must have accessory as of now.
Known hardware issue: YLOD (Yellow Light of Death or blu-ray lens issue) but within industry failure rate standards of less than 5%. Mostly affected are launch units.
360 - plays DVD movies, supports HDMI, Hard Disk Drive replaceable with official MS HDD. 3rd party HDD has risks of not being supported but is cheaper. Currently, the lead platform in most multi-platform games such as GTA 4, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty Series, etc. thus the game performs better on the 360.
Hardware is almost maxed out graphically and performance wise say hello to the Xbox 720 (Its successor) in 3-4 years. Project NATAL is expected to lengthen its life though but its hard to speculate when its not even out yet.
Known hardware issue: RROD or 3RL (Red Ring of Death, 3 Red Lights). Almost all early 360 versions i.e., Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon models are prone to this error. Jasper Edition (latest and already out more than 1 year na) is reliable and has no reported issues as to date.
ONLINE Support: If you like playing with other gamers across the globe.
PS3 - Online play is FREE! Some games have dedicated servers which means NO LAG!
360 - Online play is P2500 or $50.00 per year but is better than PS3s current online offering. Like VoiceChat with a group of friends anytime. Easy accessibility to any game your friends are playing, more personalized gamer profile, much more social with Facebook and Twitter integration, etc.
CONCLUSION:
Get the console which you like more in terms of games, hardware capablity, life, and online play. Dont' worry about reliablity today as technology has gotten better and the issues that have plagued both PS3 and 360 are things of the past.
