sharing what i've learned so far are:
1. you have to be good at directing the subject on what to do, don't expect them to do something that will come out nice when shot. so visualize what you want your shot to look like then communicate clearly what you want your subject to do.
2. you have to be very very good with exposure i.e. aperture, iso and shutter speed as you may only get 1 chance to capture a very brief moment candidly.
3. it is good to be prepared with extra batt, flash, memory cards and if possible camera just in case something goes wrong. it is best if you bring a laptop to upload the shots that you took so you don't lose a lot of precious shots if the memory card gets busted or accidentally gets deleted.
4. know your math. if you manage to get 1 good shot after shooting 5 then you should shoot 500 shots to get 100 good ones.
5. shoot in RAW and in Daylight wb mode especially when there are many differing colors of lights at any of the venue so you get consistent skin tones and can easily be adjusted later on in post processing.
i learned all these through first-hand experience shooting as back-up to my mentor. hope this helps. goodluck!
