Exclamation [FILTERS EXCHANGE] Infrared Conversion Nikon and Canon (Batch 6) - 15 types

Now on it's 6th batch, the IR conversions from Filters Exchange has done over 70 camera conversions. Thank you for supporting us!

What is exactly done during the infrared conversion?
Most modern digital SLR's today are sensitive to visible light as well as infrared light. In order to stop the infrared light from contaminating the images, they place a hot mirror filter in front of the sensor which blocks the infrared part of the spectrum while allowing visible light to pass through.

This infrared-blocking hot mirror filter is removed and replaced with our custom manufactured infrared filter. We then adjust/recalibrate the focus for the cameras. For Nikon cameras, we adjust to the standard 18-55 kit lens. For Canon we adjust for the standard 18-55 kit lens or the Canon EF-S 10-22.

Why is this better than using a normal infrared filter like the Hoya R72 Infrared filter?
Using infrared lens filters like the Hoya R72 on modern digital SLR's is a bit tricky. Because the infrared-blocking hot-mirror filter blocks most of the infrared light reaching the sensor, longer exposures times (a few seconds or even minutes) are required to let in the proper amount of infrared light. The longer exposure times means people are difficult to photograph and setting up a tripod is required which makes the process even longer.

In addition, because of the opaque infrared filter in front of the lens, you can't see anything in the viewfinder meaning you can't properly compose and focus, making the process even more time consuming.

After conversion, exposure times are much shorter. For instance, a Canon 1000d or Nikon D60 on a sunny day at ISO 100, F/8 will have a shutter speed of around 1/200. This makes handheld shots easier and since there is no opaque filter in front of the lens, you can see everything in the viewfinder and focus/compose like normal.

What type of filter do you use?
The filters used in the infrared conversion are special custom made filters. The filters are made of glass and laser-cut to the exact specifications of your camera. Our product as tested is far superior than most IR filters in the market in terms of output and materials.

Be careful of other IR conversion out there and make sure that your filter is made of glass, laser-cut and your conversion is done in a clean room / dust free area. (Some filters put inside the camera are not even glass and converted in a non-dust free room.)

What kinds of conversions do you have?

There are 15 infrared versions available. Each version has its own pros and cons.

    1. Black and White Infrared
Black & White Infrared or B/W IR has the highest contrast among all the infrared versions. Pictures will be in black & white colors straight from the camera.

Perfect for black & white photography lovers. High contrast B/W pictures. The biggest downside to this version is all pictures are only in greyscale. Limited creative output and more difficult to process than colored infrared conversions.

    2. Full infrared
Full infrared is the standard infrared version, highly similar to the Hoya R72 filter. The full infrared filters used in this is not the Hoya R72 but a but a custom glass filter with the same cutoff of around 720nm. The sky will be brown, and leaves change to white or light grey.

This version can be post processed to unlimited tone and color creations. Unique and true infrared style. Excellent for landscape photography. Full IR needs more post processing skill in Photoshop.

    3. Enhanced Color
Enhanced color infrared is similar to full infrared but has a lower nm cutoff. Colors look a lot like full IR but the leaves will be a bit blue. Normal channel swap in Photoshop will result in an output similar to visible IR. But with the proper processing in Photoshop, there are a lot of creative possibilities.

This version is between Full IR and Special enhanced/Golden IR. You have options to create infrared images with different styles. Good for landscape photography. However, Enhanced color infrared needs some post processing skill in Photoshop.

    4. Special Enhanced/Goldie Infrared
This is actually the Enhanced Color version in Batch 1. Special Enhanced Color is similar to Enhanced Color infrared, but is easier to post process. Generally the photos will have that 'golden' hue. Sky will be brown / orange, and leaves will be cyan. With normal channel swap, we get brilliant blue sky and yellow leaves.

This version is very easy to post process. It’s good for landscape and people photography. This version is unique because infrared filters for this conversion is not available in stores (unlike the full infrared = hoya r72, or black and white = hoya rm90) Currently this is the most popular infrared version available. Colors are very unique. However the contrast is lower than higher cutoff filters like full Infrared, or even Black and white Infrared.

    5. Visible infrared
Visible infrared is the simplest infrared version. Post processing is not needed anymore.
Photos will appear like a normal image taken with digital cameras except that the leaves will be yellow. Skin tone is also close to the normal skin tone.

No additional post processing needed. Instant natural infrared look. Good for people shots However this version looks just like a normal picture. If there are no tree or leaves, you wouldn't notice the infrared look.

    6. Fantasy Infrared
Fantasy is easy to post process using selective colors. This version can be processed with our without channel swap. Very ideal for fashion and events photography.

This version is easy to post process and the resulting colors are vibrant and colorful. However compared to the other versions like the full and black and white, the contrast is a bit lower.

    7. Travel Infrared
One of the newest and most unique infrared versions available. The colors are unique but there is not need for extra post processing in Photoshop. This is perfect for travel photography.

For this type of conversion, almost no post processing needed because the skin tones are normal. Perfect for landscape, wedding photography or pre-nuptial / engagement sessions.

    8. Fashion infrared
Very unique infrared version for fashion and glamour photography. Leaves are unique because they are purple.

No more extra post processing needed in Photoshop because the skin tones are normal (unlike the special/enhanced golden). Perfect for fashion and glamour shoots or for wedding / pre-nuptial / engagement sessions.

    9. Multi-Colored infrared / CPL infrared
One of the newest infrared versions available. This kind of conversion is unique because a linear polarizer is attached inside the camera and another CPL is optional outside so you can change the colors like what you usually do with a CPL.

Colors for this version are dynamic and you can change them when you rotate. Problem is the colors are not as consistent across the image (same as the uneven polarization of the CPL).

    10. Batavia infrared

Samples direct from camera. Unique Infrared version for indoor shooting and model/ glamour photography. Leaves are white / yellow / purple and sky is blue.

No more extra post processing needed in Photoshop because the skin tones are normal (unlike the special/enhanced golden). Perfect for fashion and glamour shoots or for wedding / pre-nuptial / engagement sessions.

    11. Venezia infrared

Samples are direct from camera. Another uniqe infrared version. Purple leaves and greenish-blue sky.

Skintone is near-normal and there is almost no need for post processing although it can be applied to enhance the effect.

    12. PreNup infrared

Another version that is pretty much similar to the travel infrared. One of the versions where almost no processing is needed since the skin tone is normal.

This version has dark yellow / orange leaves. Perfect for shooting people in wedding / pre-nuptial shoots or for general landscape photography.

    13. Violetta infrared

Another version more or less similar to fashion and batavia infrared. Leaves are purple and the sky is blue

Skin tones are normal so post-processing is not necessary (but can be applied as necessary) Perfect for fashion or glamour shoots as well as wedding photography.

    14. Pastella infrared

This is the newest version that's most similar to a normal photo but with an added IR effect. Leaves are yellow and skintone is normal.

Post processing is not needed anymore for this version but can be done for added effect. This is perfect for landscape and model photography.

    15. GoldiePro infrared

Very similar to the Goldie version above. Main difference is this version is more contrasty but less saturated.

What makes you different from other sellers selling converted infrared cameras?
We offer 9 different kinds of infrared filters for our conversion. In contrast, other sellers usually only offer one type of converted camera.
Converting your own cameras also means you know the history of your camera. Buying converted cameras will expose you to some risks associated with second hand units. High shutter count/actuation usually means cameras are nearing the end of their shutter life.

Finally you can be assured of the quality of the converted units. We have been converting cameras since January 2009. With 4 batches of infrared conversions since January 2009, we have successfully converted over 50 digital SLR cameras. A lot of those who've had their units converted are famous wedding photographers, local landscape experts and budding serious amateurs.
