Link exchange does not work trust me.... It may work if two sites were related in topic. But two completely different websites linking to each other? It will do both more harm than good.
better build quality content, that way you gain one-way links from others... Only quality contents get linked to. For example most writers link to wikipedia since they know the source is trusted. If you can establish this kind of authority on your site, then gaining inbound links would not be as hard you think it is.
