I guess Albert Einstein should be exempted. Even though I really admire how he handled his personal struggles in life.

Anyway, my favorite would probably be Richard Feynman. He was just as brilliant as Einstein. He spearheaded the Modern Physics revolution. He was also a very witty clever guy. He also has the most informative and understandable video lectures on several topics in Modern Physics. He's an amazing instructor. He teach physics in great awe, which you simply can not resist. =) hehehe

to TS: is it scientist AND inventor? or is it scientist OR inventor?
some scientists are not inventors.

so it was unnecessary to ask fritzd about feynman's "Theoretical and claimed inventions." It is enough that feynman was a renowned physicist.

Sorry boss. wala ko kabaw nga scientist and inventor diay imong pasabot.. hehe

anyway, sakto gihapon.. although Richard Feynman was a theoretical physicist. He worked closely with engineers. During the 70's when IBM was developing powerful super computers, Feynman has a Computer Scientist friend who was trying to solve the heating problem of the ICs. He couldn't solve the problem using conventional means that he knew. Richard Feynman approached the problem in a different way proposed his own scheme. In the end, his friend used Richard's method. So in a way, Feynman made some great contributions. You don't really need to ask me about Richard Feynman. There are so many things about him on the net. He is one of the most influential people of the 21st century. He won the Nobel Prize, for goodness sake....

But if you really insist on the Scientist AND Inventor idea, my favorite then would be Theodore Maiman. He is an Experimental Physicist. He built/INVENTED the first working LASER which was a solid state RUBY laser. At that time, nobody knew what to use it for but now, it is the sole of Optics and Photonics and Technology of today. It is also the core of my research field. hehe Peace!

For me Thomas Edison, he developed so many devices that become very useful to us, one of those is the light bulb.

World War I and WWII subs ran on both diesel while surfaced and batteries (electric) when submerged. I guess Tesla thought he was first to conceptualize this, unfortunately, Verne (couldn't help but chuckle when I typed this in) conceptualized it first ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautilus_(Verne) ).
